i am a new user but would be grateful for some help.
how much does a blue or black great dane pup cost on average?
will it be more expensive if it is show quality or  are they all priced the same?
does it differ pup to pup.
i know a lot depends on what lines they come from but i would be grateful for some information

the breed club secretaries should be able to advise of the current price range for pups from reputable breeders, and also advise which health tests the parents should have been through.

We thought about a dane and I have all the books to prove it, but decided upon a Dobermann instead:rolleyes: I do know they can range in price greatly and up to £1000 I did meet a lady whilst out walking in our woods who used to show years ago and she had a beautiful big lad with her. She told me, she and OH had decided they would like another Dane, but as a pet. After being out of the breed for a few years, she took herself off to the shows and put the word around that she wanted one. Pretty soon she was offered several youngsters that had been brought on for showing but had not turned out as well as expected by their breeders and were looking for good homes. She picked up a lovely 18 month old boy who didn't cost her a penny and is wonderful, just what they were looking for. Perhaps she fell lucky because she used to show and still knew a few names in showing? She said no, that's not the case, anyone can do the same.
If this is true, it looks like it will depend.

Hi Masiebeth. I have great danes and I can honestly say that they are the most wonderful, loyal gentle giants. I have just purchased a blue and a little bit of advice for you.... Blues can apparently suffer more health problems than the other colours. That is why it is much more important to have one with the reliable backgrounds. A few breeders that I spoke to said that they had given up on Blues as there are not enough good blue pedigrees in the country to take the breed forward, I do not believe that wholeheartidly but I did look far and wide to get what I can reliably say was the best around. I did a lot of research before getting my new girl and I must say it was well worth the wait. If you want any help with choosing a good breeder / litter just PM me and I will give you a few names which I know in the Dane world that will help you. Good luck in your search but do expect to pay around £1000 for a nice pup with good breeding, from parents who are hip scored. I also have Harlequins who can be a little highly strung and I must say that the blue's are my favourite colour!!

I think you can get a quality blue from around £800, from hip scored parents. Blacks are less popular, so tend to be a little cheaper. (Buying a harlequin to show is a VERY expensive business.)

As with all breeds, it's important to go to a breeder who has been successful in the show ring if that's what you hope to do yourself.

Do you have any idea why blacks should be less popular?  They're my favourite of the Danes.

LOL, we've had this conversation on here many times. I love 'em too, but the general public doesn't. It's been said on here before that rescue centres have problems rehoming black dogs of all breeds (and, apparently, black cats too - although they're my favourite).

Interesting...I love black dogs. The fact that I have a brown dog of a breed that is more commonly black is another matter :D.

My first dane was brought from breeders and was a beautiful blue. He had cancer at a very early age and when I phoned the breeders to tell them they informed me they had now lost their whole line to cancer!!!!

I now have a beautiful merle bitch who I got from fantastic breeders (after much research).  Because merles are not recognised for the show world she was a lot cheaper than the show quality danes in the same litter.

I also have the most handsome brindle boy.  He came via rescue at the tender age of 5 weeks as he was going to be put to sleep by his back yard breeders - who then had a change of heart - and handed him into the rescue. Benson is partially sighted and as a pup was barely able to walk as his balance was dreadful.  Now at nearly two years old he is a PAT dog, has done giant breed agility and leads a very busy and fun life.

There are loads of danes in rescue of all ages and colours.  Maybe you could look there if you are not wanting to show???

Just had a sneaky look and the blues are nice but the Merles are gorgeous!

Yep I love the black ones too the way they shine like a mirror in the sun.  With my first breed (BSD) I much preferred the black ones to the coloured ones that many find more glamorous.

Would always prefer a black to the dilute often grubby looking blue colour. 

Hi there we have a harlequin dane and a black dane with white chest /paws.
Indeed they are gentle giants costs can vary greatly do you want one for showing or a pet a good site to go on is the greatdane owners forum.
The site as a list of all the dane rescue centres.
There are many good danes in need of good homes and please research the breed.
They love human company if you get a dane they are very addictive!!!!.

Ooh Mantles.  One round the corner.  I am glad they can now be shown.  In America they call that pattern Boston, think it looks very dapper.

I too love these dogs but they wouldn't be right for us - a tad on the large side lol!
Are the harlequins the black and white ones that are more 'patchy' and almost (sorry to offend anyone but I can't think how else to describe them) patterned like cows ?  There is a black one that lives around here and he is gorgeous - as said before he shines like the sun!!!
I think I'll just have to admire this breed from afar for the forseable future.

Piebald! Mind you, I often say my tricolour Cavalier eats grass because she's cow coloured! :-)
