Hi
I have read a few times on here about a book some of you give your new owners about bringing up their new pups. Cannot for the life of me remember what it's called !
Can someone help me out?
Thanks
Aileen.

I like Gwen Bailey's book, but find Carolyn Mentith's new dog book even better. :-)

If it's for you Aileen you might like Ian Dunbar's Before and After Getting Your Puppy. That's my favourite - so far.

Yep I bought that one at the same time as I bought the perfect puppy, it is higher brow maybe than the perfect puppy, more for the person really into the subject.

I agree, that's why I thought Aileen might like it as she's not a novice pet owner. Have you read Donaldson's Culture Clash? I really like that one too. It's great for pointing out the false expectations some people have of their dogs and advising on how to work with a dog so it understands. If I bred a litter I would give that and the Perfect Puppy to most owners and Dunbar to those I thought would read it.

I have heard it is good but not had a chance to read it.

Thanks for your replies, Yes it  is for me, hoping to have a nice bitch pup from Merlot this time, she is due 12/13th Jan. I thought I could do with a bit of reading to remind me how to do the job of bringing her up properly...mind you after the amount of pups I have had you would think I should know how to do it :eek::eek:
Never to late to learn new tricks though and I love to learn how others do the job.
I have taken the details of all of them and am hoping "Santa" is feeling a bit generous this year (First Xmas as a newly married woman, hope he is still in love!!!) Mind you he has bought me a sat nav so I don't get lost going to shows!!!
Now on a different tack...what do I call the daghter of Merlot? I quite like Vino?

Rosé? Chardonnay?

In that case I'd ask for Dunbar's. It has more real behaviour discussion, novel ideas and is more in depth than Bailey's. I re-read before I brought my second puppy home for the same reason.

A few of my puppy owners used the Ian Dunbar book and had very good results. It is very different to the norm but good results.

Some of my puppy owners used Dunbar's book. They found it different from the norm but had really good results.

I am bringing up a new pup as well and find I've forgotten a lot in 14+ years.  With Jet I used Brian Killcommons and Sarah Wilcox's book, Good Owners, Great Dogs.  The breeder endorses this book wholeheartedly.  But I wonder how it is thought of here?

I'm about half way through that one, it's excellent. :)
