Hi all
Does anyone out there know anything about employment law and redundancy payments please?
ie how much you are entitled too for whatr will be fifteen years unbroken service come february.
Don,t really want to go into detail at the moment as I,m feeling really upset but just need an idea of what may be to come or not to come.
Thankyou
Sharon

It all depends on the company and if they have a redundancy policy.

This is a good place to start as it gives the steps a company must take if they are considering making anybody redundant.

More on payments entitlement.

It is a horrible situation to be so hope it all works out. I have been made redundant three times and the first time was terrible as I took it personally :( The second and third times were not as bad and actually knew what to expect and ended up financially in a good position as luckily I was able to get a job quite quickly. Hopefully it wll be the same for you :)

Best of luck and try and keep positive about things even if things seem to look bleak.

Like previously mentioned it depends on the company as to what settlement you recieve-
If its statutory I think its just a weeks pay for every year you have been employed there ..............

Oh dear Sharon :-(  I'm in the exact same position- I've just been made redundant whilst I'm on maternity leave (not due back til end of Jan)- they've paid me up on my maternity pay (to the end of Jan) plus 4 wks notice period and a week for every year that I've worked there- oh and holiday pay owing to me :-(

Try not to be too down though- when one door shuts and all ;-) I decided I wanted a change from accounts and applied for a few teaching assistant/support worker positions- I've got one :-D  I start on the 7th Jan- all those long summers and holidays off with my kids :-D

So chin up- you never know whats round the corner :-)

Why are so many redundancies jut before Christmas though.

Alot of it has to do with Year ends and having to show the reduction in Overhead costs which is normally the first thing that they will look at and one of the most costly OH in most companies are the staff costs. :(

It is the time of year though when money is most tight for everyone and I know so many people made redundant on the run up to Christmas, and of course no-one is hiring new staff at that time of year (excluding holiday temps)..

It is very unfortunate timing :( Two of the times it happened to me it was in December

Thanks everyone for your replys
I don,t think in my case its anything to do with the time of year more a case of the personnel officer offering her best mate a managerial role which in effect means they don,t want me.
I,ve spent the last fifteen years of my life there and always given what I believe to be my best.
Today I,ve calmed down a bit and told myself I,ll be better of without them if they are the sort of people running our company, I truly believe I am a better person than they are if they are capable of pulling a stunt like this I keep asking myself what will come next?
My options are let this new girl come in and take over my responsobilitys and work under her.
Let the company work out a redundancy package
or just call it a day and leave
I have been asked to train and run my own slimming world group after losing five and a half stone with them and have been considering this for the last two or three months maybe its the push I needed.
in the meantime though there are still bills to pay and dogs to feed
Thanks everyone for lending me your ears.

Let them pay you out- after 15 years of service you should get enough of a payout to keep you going for a few months while you come up with something else :-)  Well done on losing all that weight by the way :-)  I agree you should use this as the push you need to run a slimming club- just think no more 9-5 same old crap, same crappy management etc :-D
