She has been throwing up all weekend, so took her to the vets tonight knowing the outcome.
The vet can give her meds to sustain the way she is now. But it will not improve her. And the way she is now, then I dont want her to live like that.
You all said you would know.
Well I realised today, and when I went into the vets he agreed.
She has not gone yet. I want her to go at home.
So I have to make the appointment and he will come, do it, take her and privatly cremate her and I will get her ashes back in a wooden box about a week later.
The reason I know its the right decision is I am not hysterical. I am calm.
I have told the kids, we have cried and had a cuddle. They have agreed.
Now I just have to work out when.In reality it should be asap. But I have to work out when is best for us both.
I am feeling so numb, its as if I am typing this for someone else.
I dont think it has quite sunk in.
Lea.

Thinking of you, Glad you are doing it at home, we did for our last two and it was much more peaceful that way. You are doing the best thing you can under the circumstances,
A Few words to comfort you:

If It should be....

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done
For this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand
Don't let your grief then stay your hand
For this day, more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test
We've had so many happy years
What is to come can hold no fears

Would you want me to suffer? So
when the time comes please let me go
Take me where my needs they'll tend
only stay with me to the end.

And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see
I know in time that you will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.

Although my tail it's last has waved
From pain and suffering I have been saved
Do not grieve  it should be you
Who must decide this thing to do.

We've been close, we two these years
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Our love and thoughts are with you.

Very sorry to hear this Lea {{{{{Hugs }}}}} for all of you.

FROM FRIEND TO FRIEND

You're giving me a special gift, so sorrowfully endowed,
And through these last few cherished days your courage makes me proud.

But really, love is knowing when your best friend is in pain,
And understanding earthly acts will only be in vain.

So looking deep into your eyes, beyond, into your soul,
I see in you the magic that will once more make me whole.

The strength that you possess, is why I look to you today,
To do this thing that must be done, for it's the only way.

That strength is why I've followed you, and chose you as my friend,
And why I've loved you all these years... my partner 'til the end.

Please, understand just what this gift, you're giving, means to me,
It gives me back the strength I've lost, and all my dignity.

You take a stand on my behalf, for that is what friends do.
And know that what you do is right, for I believe it too.

So one last time, I breathe your scent, and through your hand I feel,
The courage that's within you, to now grant me this appeal.

Cut the leash that holds me here, dear friend, and let me run,
Once more a strong and steady dog, my pain and struggle done.

And don't despair my passing, for I won't be far away,
Forever here, within your heart, and memory I'll stay.

I'll be there watching over you, your ever faithful friend,
And in your memories I'll run ...a young dog once again.

Dear Lea, family and of course sweet Gemma.

I'm so sorry to read this thread and know the agony and heartache you're going through and what lies ahead :(

>The reason I know its the right decision is I am not hysterical. I am calm.

That is a very good sign Lea, and means the time is right for you to handle things best for Gemma now, better than waiting a second too late and her being anxious or suffering physically in any way.

Sending blessings to you all.

Dear Lea

I am sorry to read this.  It is one of the hardest decisions to make but you know it is the right one.  As you said you know the time has come.  I know what you are going through but you will be strong for Gemma.  Hugs to you and your family.

Lea,
I had to make this difficult decision in Sept for my old girl, (17).
When the time came the vet came out to my house, because I was calm and had made the appt the day before, I was prepared and felt a lot better afterwards.
You know you are doing the right thing, the best thing for Gemma, thinking of you.
