Topic Dog Boards / General / Basset Moulting Patterns?
- By MW184 [gb] Date 03.12.07 10:15 UTC
Hi

Does anybody know if this time of year is about right for a bassett hound to moult very heavily.  I'm asking on behalf of a friend and she says that her male bassett is moulting so heavily that every time he moves he is leaving an outline of himself on the carpet, during a bath she had to take hair out of the plug several times because it was getting blocked.

Do you think this is normal?

thanks for your help

Maxine

Very normal for a dog to moult heavily at least once, but usually twice a year (obviously loosing the summer coat is less than the winter coat).  Some male dogs especially only seem to have a full out moult every couple of years, so maybe as it is heavier than usual this is the case with him.

You should see my lot in full moult.  fill the dyson daily just from kitchen and living room.

Thanks for that - I've passed your thoughts on,

hi there, only just joined the forum not really sure how to use it as yet, i noticed that u give advice on dog moulting.I have a black lab retriever, shes 3 yrs old i have only just got her, her moulting is shocking .i have laminate flooring down and i am hoovering and sweeping up to 5, 6 times per day. i do expect to have dog hair but not to this extent.
Its that bad honest its really stressing me out!!! how often do dogs moult?? is there absoulutely anything at all i could do to keep this to a minimum, any type of dog brush, vitamins ,anything at all, i do brush her every few days and the amount of hair she sheds is huge, it does help but not that bigger difference.I would really appreciate any advice thankyou.

Hi Hay! Labs are reputed to moult twice a year - from January 1st until June 30th, then from July 1st till December 31st! Seriously, labs do moult a certain amount all year round with a couple of really bad moults when they change from their winter to summer coats, and vice versa. They should really be brushed through every day, getting right down to the skin to make sure you get out any dead undercoat. Laminate floors are notoriously bad at showing all the shed hair which would otherwise stick to carpet and not be so noticeable. The only thing to do is keep on top of the daily grooming, and maybe turn your central heating down a bit so the dog doesn't get too hot.

there are a few posts on here about a blaster (?) folk with longer haired breeds seem to think it helps reduce it...thats just the impression i got from what they said, might be rubbish (i'm a smooth coated breed girly myself :D)
