Topic Dog Boards / General / Accidental damage insurance

I am sure that somebody said recently that they were able to claim for something that happened that a dog did in their house. Can't remember who, what or where or I could have dreamt it  Can anybody help ?

The reason why I ask is that with the combination of a cat peeing problem and one of the dogs having an accident two of our carpets are ruined  I have checked with both my pet insurance and house hold insurance and neither cover us

If either of my girls went into anybody elses house and peed and ruined their carpet we would be covered

Yes and my house has a lovely aroma at the moment :D

I'll send someone round to pee on your carpets and then you can say it wasn't your animals. ;)

Hope you have good insurance then as Lucy would then be able to claim of yours Marianne !!!
- By LJS Date 29.11.07 17:08 UTC
Yes but it excludes any damage by animals. The pet insurance only covers my girls in somebody elses house unless you are offering to claim on your insurance for me  :D

Oh - Lucy - this is so topical for me!

Eight months ago I ordered my first new leather suite (before deciding to getting new pup) - have always had second hand ones before. Have only had itfour months - well, my six month lab (who is not a big chewer as labs go) managed to get through the stairgate and has just chewed the arms on one side of each sofa...  Have just got off the telephone from a leather repair company.......
Although I have accidental damage, it will not cover damage done by domestic pets..... :(

Edited to add:
I didn't think to look at pet insurance..... will check that....although I think it will be a longshot!

Oh dear both you & Lucy  My own insurance neglects cover for animal damage too and Lizzie chewed a lovely hole in the kitchen flooring ( now covered by a mat  )

I have had accidental pet damage on my home insurance but the only company that I am aware that do it are Halifax. I claimed off Halifax for a carpet and wooden door that got scratched and ripped when our old dog got accidentaly shut in the bedroom, this was about 8 years ago now. I am not sure if Halifax still cover for accidental pet damage but they used to. Have changed insurance now because we found we were paying at least £200 more a year because of the pet damage cover and as we had only claimed once it just isn't worth paying the premium price that they charge.

Some of the carpet shops who offer insurance cover for pet damage. About 6 years ago I had this insurance and they paid out for a new carpet after sending out a guy who assessed it. whiskey loved tennis balls but they were a pain for finding once in the garden. I also ran an out of school club where it was a pain if the kids were playing tennis etc and we would lose all the balls. Thought i'd order some red tennis balls.........brilliant thinking and it worked brilliantly in both situations.........however if you give a dog a red tennis ball and they play with it it gets mixed with drool:rolleyes: and guess what the dye runs and stains the carpets:eek:
Never again will I have red tennis balls in my house. The insurance was good though.

Maybe with a new puppy on the way carpet may not be the way to go thinking about the breeding!!!

Hi Lucy,

Unfortunatly there is a big difference to accidental damage than carpets being ruin but animals doing the toliet ;-) that isn't accidental. ( SORRY)

If it happened that your animal did it in someone elses house this may be covered as it comes under the 3rd party claims.

Being honest can you imagine how bad the insurance would be ( if it can get worse) if people claimed for soiled carpets ;-)  Carpet wise would be in heavy BUT our insurance would be £120 per month :-D

We claimed on our house insurance for a laptop knocked off the table by our dogs and got a new for old laptop and i also blamed them for a crack on our toilet they apparently knocked a cup off the window ledge  (well the dogs couldnt deny it!) and because we couldnt get a toilet to match (sickly green colour) we got a new bathroom suite!!

Can you see the difference in the two though mygirl.  Knocking something over accidently is different to an animal soiling the carpet.

I know it probably seems tough but they have to make a cross line.

I actually wonder at times with Claims on house insurance doubled in the last 10 years how premiums are actually reasonably low.

I think mobile phones is another one, insurers used to cover lost phones but most don't now.

So if it had been a toddler that weed or been sick everywhere on the carpet you would be able to claim for that if you were unable to get the stain out : confused: If the dog was house trained then they had an accident say due to and infection then it would be classed as an accident I would say. In my case we were to blame as we both though we had left them out for a final wee at night but we hadn't so our fault really

Basically Lucy that is it.     Humans are are viewed different to animals.   Honestly when you think about it think how many  animal owners get a ruined carpets during puppyhood can you imagine being honest if everyone claimed. :eek::eek:  Basically family are viewed as part of important life and animals are a luxury. Some insurers won't cover anything to do with animals even if they knocked the TV over etc.

Will a good carpet cleaner not do the job.. like rugdoctor which really deep cleans?    Is it actually permenantly stained?

Do what most do get them cleaned and put a couple of rugs down :-D :-D or is it worse than that.

Years ago I could have killed one of my dogs, I bought a lovely cream and tan pure wool rug from Next a really big one it was about £400-£500, and a puppy escaped my sight and  piddled on it. We I stupidly got on my hands and knees with a cleaner and scrubbed the life out of it. When it dried I had what looked like a bleach section. I nearly cried as I loved the rug..   It ended up for a few months in the garage I swear under my husbands motor bike then eventually

> Years ago I could have killed one of my dogs,

I know the feeling   The quote for repair to my sofas is over £1000....

good job she's such a gorgeous pup....

Still, at least the leather repairers had a laugh when I sent the pics of the damage and included one of the culprit looking like butter wouldn't melt...:)
- By LJS Date 30.11.07 12:28 UTC
We have tried cleaning the carpets about three times now and no they didn't consider doing it it the middle of the floor where a rug would have looked lovely :D

We are going to have to replace them I think anyway with wooden flooring as cream carpets are not really the best thing with chocolate Labs :D

Dunno if it's me you're thinking of.....I claimed on my M&S pet insurance when my dog let the pup out of her crate last year and she trashed my three piece suite.  They offered to pay for a new suite but for various reasons I went for the re-upholstering of the old suite.  £800!  :-)
- By JenP Date 30.11.07 16:12 UTC
That's interesting Gunner - if you don't mind me asking, what part of the insurance covered it?  I'm with petplan not m&s, but if they have similar may give them a call.
- By Gunner [eu] Date 30.11.07 18:20 UTC
Hi
M&S have a section entitled 'accidental damage to own property' - having just looked it up on my policy, it was actually £750 (the max) that they coughed up and not £800 as I cited earlier.  However, whatever....it was VERY welcome and ensured that a certain pup lived to see another day! :-)
