Topic Dog Boards / Health / Follow up Inoc. - is it necessary?
- By Denise [gb] Date 02.07.02 06:01 UTC
This could have been one of my dog's - (but actually it concerned one of my cats). I did not have my cat inoculated last year (indoor cat who has an outdoor pen). I feel there is truth in the suggestion that out pets do not need inoculations every year, (every other year perfectly adequate). However, when I went along with her last night, after giving her the inoc., the Vet said that because she was 'out of date', she would need ANOTHER inoc., in three weeks time. (There is current evidence that she would NOT be 'out of date' anyway)!

Do others here think there might be something in the second inoc., that they could not have included in the first! Or is it just a way to ensure the Vet obtains extra revenue that they missed out on before!!

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments,
Denise.

Dear Denise
Having only had experience of dog jabs, I do think that many vets over-vaccinate. Some of the more discerning vets, though, are now suggesting that after the first booster, they need only be done every three years. I think there's blood tests you can have done to guage whether the animal still has protection.
Since my terrier died a few years ago following an adverse reaction to a vaccination I no longer have my dogs done after their initial puppy jabs. I use homeopathic nosodes instead. Obviously most vets still recommend yearly boosters, possibly because they see it as regular income but I think most responsible owners would be happy to pay for annual check-ups instead.
If I were you, Denise, I don't think I would want a second innoculation just three weeks after the first - but perhaps it would be worth asking exactly which diseases the two innoculations relate to.
Best wishes
Joyce

Hey Joyce, I'm a nosode person too! If you use the search button at the top of this page, you'll see that we've debated it a lot on here before!

Hi Denise, Joyce is giving you sound advice. Please do some research before having more vaccinations.
Joyce is talking about having your animal titred, Glasgow Diagnostic Services do it & it gives you an idea of the animals antebodies to certain diseases before they have more vacc. All the new evidence & research coming out now is animals do not need to be boostered yearly! Puy the word VACCINOSIS in a search engine & it should give you some interesting facts about vaccines.

Very grateful to you ladies for some very interesting advice, which is much appreciated.

I am also sure that I heard somewhere that neutering and vacinnation were the basic two areas that Vets relied on regularly for income.

Regards to you,
Denise.
