Good evening.
I'm looking for a breeder in the UK who has imported a puppy from France under the "Balai directive". I've found the info (law text) on the internet but I must admit I don't understand a single word of it .... (french being my mother tongue).
Thanks if you can help.

The Balai Directive has now been superceeded by the Pet Passport Scheme although the basics are the same. If you want information on the Pet Travel Scheme go to www.defra.gov.uk

Welcome to the forum SylvieL
Bec is right. The Pet Passport is also a better option than the Balai Directive.
If you type in the word 'Pet Passport' into the search facility in the top righthand corner of the forum page, it will bring up lots of past threads on this subject. Here is one to be going on with:

Actually, it seemed to me that the "Balai" rules were less stringent than the "PETS" rules ... the main problem being the 6 months to wait between rabies titers testing and importation, leading to impossibility to import a pup younger than 10 m/o - I thought with the Balai stuff it was possible to import a younger puppy. I may be wrong though. I'm going to take a look at the archives.
Thanks for your help.

I think you will find that the time scale is roughly the same for all three options: Quarantine,Pet Passport and Balai. If I remember correctly, there was very little in it.
The main advantage to the PP over Balai is that the dog in question doesn't have to stay cooped up on the breeders property for all those months. With the PP, the dog can get out and about socialising/showing or whatever :-)
With the Balai ... it can not leave the breeders property at all.

Trouble with Balai was that the pups had to be kept on the breeders property for six months, in effect quarantined with the breedr, at least with pets the dog lead a normal life!

Hmmm ... so I was mistaken in thinking the Balai thing would be shorter. Actually I don't mind keeping a puppy untill he's 10 m/o before sending him, but I'd have thought the importer would have preferred to have her pup earlier. I will have time to work on him, train him and show him a bit to get acustomed to the thing. He's 2 m/o today, and it looks like he's promising enough for us to make plans, so I'm just beginning to gather information.
