A friend of mine has a 7 month old labrador puppy and now has bought another one:rolleyes: and I was shocked to be told that the breeder had innoculated them himself, I thought that only vets could do this or am I wrong.?
I am sure there is a loop hole somewhere which means that someone can administer vaccinations without being a vet. I cannot remember What the loop hole is or where to find it but it hgas been brought up before on the board :) Lea :)
I have a feeling that rescue centres can administer one vaccination if they have trained personnel but the animal needs to be vet checked for the other one. But I may be wrong. And I wouldn't expect a breeder to fit into that category.
in canada, you can vaccinate, crop, dock, remove declaws, on YOUR OWN DOGS without supervision from a vet. Its in the books, but I dont know of anyone who does this.
The only time a breeder can legally vaccintate dogs/puppies themselves is when a Vet allows their client to do so. It is called a 'herding system' usually a practice more commonly used between vets and farmers on farm animals. Although it is known that this does happen on puppy farms. It is also known to happen amongst breeders that acquire the vaccine from Ireland where it can be purchased across the counter and off the internet and they vaccinate the puppies themselves. A very dodgy practice if the vaccine is not kept correctly prior to being used or the breeder is found out to be offering/using this procedure and the Veterinary Medicine Directorate were to hear of it.
You can get the vaccine from Ireland and do it yourself. You get all the paperwork and stickers etc. I believe a lot of people do it and seeing that it (depending upon where you are in this country) is around £40 to £80 cheaper this way I can see why some people do it!
