Been to the stud dog for two days now and although my bitch is not a maiden and she is soooo ready (Little Hussey in fact) and the dog is no novice and has mated bitches before ..we have only managed two slipped matings. He is entering her OK and going through the motions and doing the quick step etc.. all in the right places, but he is not tying with her, She is dripping copious amounts of clear fluid after and he is obviously doing the full job (Still swollen and pumping fluid after climbing off her) We are keeping him in place as long as possible and he is not coming away untill after he has done his dancing leg stomping bit!
We are at a loss to find a reason why they are not tying? anyone any advice???:rolleyes:

If it were my dog I would hold him onto the bitch, in my experience they don't tie until after they're finished 'doing the quick step' as you call it :D I would usually wrap my arms around their two back ends - like a bear hug and hold on till I was sure they had tied. You can check underneath with one hand to make sure he's still in there, don't let go for 10 mins or so :)

We did hang on for dear life but he slipped out...no good hanging on when he is "dangling it in the air"
Could she be a little tight for him do you think? she tied with the dog no trouble on her first litter. And of course I really want a puppy from this mating so you can see how keen I am to effect a nice tie. He has been used a good few times with no problems and both the dog owner and myself are not novices...but for him to enter her and apparently ejaculate then slip out seems very unusuall.
She is very very keen and I am pretty sure we are on the right days. Would she not hold him if she was just a day or so early do you think?
I may just add that he lives miles away and I am driving for four/five hours a day at the moment to visit him...Oh the joys of breeding....not for the faint hearted!!

She may be keen but not at her peak yet.  Bitches that are proven broods can be right little tarts and keen to stand for prolonged periods before and after the time needed.

I would give it another two days and mate her again, in hopes of getting a tie.  If she doesn't stand then you know the timing wasn't the problem, and because you ensured contact and were pretty sure of him having ej*aculated then there is every chance she may take.

Thanks Barbara, I really hope he was in the right place at the right time, we have arranged another try on Friday ...early morning so we are keeping everything crossed.

Could just be that she's not quite ready yet and not tightening to keep him in.  Good luck for Friday.  I'm off to Brighton in the morning for one of my girls, I must be mad!

I've had a litter of 10 pups before from a slip mating!

I'd also guess that she's not ready yet. I have a hussy too, she would stand for the best part of a fortnight, so am used to not taking this behaviour as a reliable indicator.

My bitch is heavily in whelp from one slip mating ( dog refused to try at second attempt ) A tie is not essential for the bitch to take !

Trouble with a slip mating is knowing if the job was doen, adn contact does need to be maintained for around a minute, so a tie is much more satisfactory.

As a bitch owner I would not expect to pay a stud fee for a slip mating until a litter was obviously on the way or born.

Well went back today and although still not a proper tie we did have about 5 Min's when the dog was still resting on her before he got of, he had finished all his dancing and thrusting so fingers crossed. We are going to go again tomorrow for a last try (Nothing if not determined!! :rolleyes:) She did a fair bit of moaning and groaning as well this time so we are much more hopeful the job was done properly.
Just out of interest have many CDers had pups from a less than satisfactory mating?

I had two slip matings with a result of 6 beautiful puppies!

Thought I would just bring you up to date...had Merl' scanned last night and she IS in pup, so the slipped matings did the trick.
Now for the hard work, just get Xmas out of the way and then it's full steam ahead for the patter of tiny paws!! Please oh please let there be a nice little girl for MEEEE!!
