Hi,I have a 10wk old German Spitz Mittel puppy(bred by myself) she is lively, playful and has a wonderful temperament. We have only 1 problem she has over the last 4 wks or so become a very picky eater (all the other pups in the litter are eating well). I can feel her ribs rather more than I like to.(want to feel them but not to her extent)
She was wormed with Drontal at 2,4,6,8,10 wks.
She is fed at 8am,12pm, 4pm and 8pm. As I'm preparing her food shes really excited but put the bowl down she sniffs and maybe picks up a couple of pieces eats them and then wanders off.
I've tried picking up aft 10 mins but she couldn't care less and same happens at next meal(only continued for 2 days as I was worried that she wasn't getting enough, Mistake?)
She was weaned on Proplan Small breed protection as mum would only eat this when she was pregnant and lactating. All my others are now on a mix of Royal Canin Adult mini and midi(2 prefer the larger nugget size) and she will steal from their bowls (still under puppy license:rolleyes:).
Is it worth trying Royal Canin midi puppy although they recommend mini for my breed?(she steals from the 2 on Midi)?
I have also tried Nature Diet Puppy and she turns her nose up at that.
Sorry for the long post!
Thanks Angela

Can I ask with an efficient wormer like drontal why you are worming quite so frequently (I normally worm twice before they go to new hoems and again at 12 weeks, though I do worm my bitches daily from day 40 in whelp).

I use panacur and I have found with any worming appetite is affected and with the less greedy pup this might become a habit.

Hi
The manufacturers recommended interval is every 2 weeks from 2-12 wks of age(drontal puppy suspension)  and at 3 monthly intervals after that. I used Panacur on their mum from 42 days preg to 2 days post partum, Used Panacur as its the only one licensed for preg bitches and Drontal in the pups as my older dog had a bad reaction after a course of Panacur at 10wks(not proven to be wormer but timing was too close for my liking). Do you think I may have overdone it?
Thanks
Angela

Personally as the pups would have had a very light worm burden with their dam having been wormed.  I would not have used it as often, probably starting later as with the small number of worms they would have been born with the numbers would not have had a chance to get so high.

I have had reactions with the Panacur, and my theory is this was due to the pups not having enough worms for it to work on, so now I worm at 3 1/2 - 4 weeks and 7-71/2 weeks and advise next worming at 12 weeks well after vaccinations.

Since using this course (which was what my vet had originally told me to do before I started buying Panacur in it's own bottles) I have never had a problem, though a fall off in appetite is common by the third day of dosing.

I only had a problem when I wormed as per their instructions at 2 1/2-3 weeks, five and 8, prior to this and since no problems.

I feel that I have the right balance between parasite control and well being of the pups, these are after all strong chemicals.

Thanks for that, Barbara. Might miss the 12wk one and see how it goes. None of the other puppy owners have had any problems though so will keep perservering and see if her appetite picks up. As I say she is full of life she just deosn't have a good appetite, when all my others are complete gannets!!.
