Topic Dog Boards / General / Cleaning faces!!
- By gina [gb] Date 30.06.02 20:10 UTC
I thought I saw some postings about putting something in the dogs water to take the discolouration out of the dog's fur. Am I right cos I cant find them now and Barney's fur around his mouth wont clean properly when we bath him. Also Molly's face is going the same colour as Barney's coloured fur thru their play fighting. Black and white shih tzu with a discoloured pinky face now LOL :D
Many thanks Gina

I seem to remember the postings talked about adding things to the diet to alter the Ph of the tears but I think someone also pointed out that it would alter the Ph of the urine too and could lead to kidney stones so I think it is best to stick to the washes you can buy for this purpose.

Didn't somebody also say offering bottled water instead of tap water could help?

Gina - do you use plastic bowls? If so this could be the cause of the pinky colour. I don't know what it is about plastic bowls, but they can cause a condition known back home (Canada) as Kennel mouth. My vet here knew about it as well.

Best to use either stainless steel or ceramic bowls esp for water.

Hope this helps.

Hi thanks for the replies.

Hi Wendy. We use ceramic bowls so hopefully this is okay. Only use plastic if in the car which is not at all often so will bear this in mind.

Hi Digger, yes just found the thread on Westies after putting in 'bottled water' in Search. Someone (forgot who now :o) suggests a drop of organic apply cider vinegar in the water. But not sure what a drop means - half a teaspoon?

Thanks Gina

Hi again. What do others use to keep the dogs faces clean (I mean not discoloured)? I have tried doggie wipes, baby wipes, baby shampoo and puppy shampoo to no avail - doesnt help the discolouration at all.

Many thanks Gina

Don't know if this will help save on the expense of bottled, but we use brita filtered water for our girls. I wonder if it would have the same effects.

It's adding vinegar that will alter the Ph Gina, I don't think its advisable.
