Does anyone know where I could get a pattern for sewing a dog coat? My Beattie's going downhill very quickly :( and I don't think she's going to be able to move fast enough this winter to keep herself warm.

I have no idea Jan......................do you have any friends with a similar size coat from which you could make a template from

I'm sure when I have been looking at dog coats on e-bay there are some patterns on there, you could try there. Good luck.

How about looking in a charity shop for a cheapy one, taking it apart and using the pieces as a guide, if you can't find a pre-done pattern?  Just as a back-up plan.

When I made Remy's coat I used him as the pattern - I used some old sheets cut into fair size pieces, then had him stand while I laid them on him and marked the shape with a marker pen.  Took a bit of adjusting and I made a rough coat in the sheet first, but it worked a treat - he's coat a coat now that goes down (and round) his legs to his elbows/knees and under his belly, it zips along the back.  Lovely fit, much better than anything shop-bought - dobes' deep chests make buying coats that fit well dang hard!  And, they don't take into account baldiness :p

If you get a fleecy blanket the cheap ones from poundland (i have some if you need any) just double it over and cut out a v at the front (for the neck part) you could then pin it to any other material to make it thicker then i use a length of ribbon double it over and stitch round the edges for piping..
The strips of velcro under the belly and to fasten the front togther... :)

I use that way to make wet coats for summer they are done in about 10mins max really easy to make...

Otherwise i have bought some thick heavy fleece ones for £8 from robinsons and thats for my breed and they are lovely quality..

Ours is the patterned fleece dog rug..

The thing is, I made a dog coat some years ago, but it never fitted as well as I wanted even though I spent ages tweaking the pattern. I used a nice warm woollen material on the inside and a waterproof gabardine on the outside. The major problem is that because the woollen lining is textured it 'walks' down the dog's body and ends up pulling tightly on the chest fastenings, so I have to keep hoicking it forward again. I want to use a slippery quilted material to stop this problem, but hoped to save several hours of tweaking by using a ready-made pattern!

JG if you sew through both layers from side to side and front to back several times (a bit like quilting) it will stop the inner lining moving of it's own accord.

It's not just the lining, it's the whole coat, Harley; to the extent that I had to change the velcro at the chest-fastening to buttons because the coat 'walked' so much that the velcro burst open.

No idea re patten, but on ebay there are some lovely dog jumpers, they look like a polo neck jumper, with short front legs and fit over the body to tail. About £25 ish I think (could be less) for your breed.

Anything knitted's no good I'm afraid because it'd just 'creep' on the hair.

Hi JG,

Sorry to hear you dog is unwell, it must be a big worry for you.

I'm not sure if this link will work (I can't do links!), but I've found a 'classic' dog coat pattern (as opposed to the 'stars & stripes' hoodie I found a minute ago)

and it shows the right model modelling it too.

Re lining, fleece shouldn't creep?  At the shows they do those short fleece blankets with no backing for sofa and chair throw.  Often small bits in the bins for a couple of pounds, you could look out for some at Midland counties, your not far from Stafford show ground even if your not showing?

Have you tried equafleece (http://www.equafleece.co.uk/). I don't use them so much for keeping dogs warm (unless it's really cold and then only the Dobes), but they are brilliant when they come back from a walk to dry off. I have the doggie jumpers which don't tend to ride up or move around.
