My dog had pups early hours wednesday morning all 6 were born healthy and doing well untill yesterday when 1 seemed week and unable to feed. We spent all night feeding and the pup improved. This morning the rest of pups were the same. Floppy and no interest in feeding also they felt cold. We put them on water bottles and gave them a feed and they seem better.
I thought it could be FPS but would they have improved if it is this.
Thanks for any info

OR IT COULD BE CAINE HERPES TO,
where they born full term or early,is the mum well.have you had them check at the vets, did all the afterbirths come away.
you say you put them on a hot wate bottles is the only heat they have just had,you need to keep them dry and warm,at lease for the first 3 week is time of year,
has the mum had kennel cough,as this is the time of year, for it,
if they not getting better take mum and pups to the vet, put the pups in a box with hot water bottels and blankets over them. take mum as well.
The pups were born full term all afterbirth came away. They are inside the house so they are warm enough. It was the vet who told me to put the pup on a water bottle.
Star was seen by a vet just days before pups were born and was in good health. She seems well herself but occasionally she has been crying, but she was like that with her last litter and was seen by a vet and all was well. Iam going to phone the vet today to get her to come to check things out.

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with your babies. We have been there, done that and got the t-shirt, so know
what you are going through. Glad to hear that the Vet is coming out to see them this morning. You say that they should be warm
enough because they are in the house, but they do need to have additional heat as well, either heat pads or a heat lamp. Hopefully, the
problems have occurred because they have been chilled. Fingers crossed that all is well.
The vet is coming out at midday. Fingers crossed.

Hi Sharon,
Please don't shoot me for asking as I am not sure how many litters you have had. :-)
They haven't got chilled not sure what breed etc as some tolerate teh cold more that others.
I have one week old pups and I tell you the temp difference from last week to this week is insane. First 4 days of their life them temp outside was 18 C , they had not heat whatsoever I was struggling a bit to keep the room cool enough as it is where the PC is to and that heats the room up a lot. The last three days the temp has dropped to 3c and they have had a heat pad on constant since this drop..
Just a thought it is all likely not but thought I would ask.
Will keep my toes and fingers crossed all is Ok..

No its fine Blue. Any reply is helpfull. The dogs are usually kept outside anyway. We only fetched Star in to have her pups.
It is our 4th litter 2nd to Star. We have them inside for a few days untill all seems to be going well, then they are moved to a clean dry warm shed and pen outside. We have had 2 litters born in January and Feb and they were perfectly warm enough.

Even dogs used to living outside can get hypothermia!

Well that is or was my concern, I swear I have never seen such a temperature drop ever. I have actually quite diligently checked the temp in my house this week as the fluctuation is incredible. The first day of the drop from 18C to 3c was quite alarming.
Not saying this is the case but with temp drops like that over night the only house really that would not experience a sudden cold is those with the heating on constant but themostatically controlled so as the temp dropped the heating rose.
Chills as most know are a very common factor in illess and death.
No puppy that young, whatever the breed, can yet regulate their body temp like an older puppy can. As they 'picked up' after having a warm feed from mum and the hot water bottles certainly indicates they are not warm enough. can you not try a heater, lamp or pad, to see if this is the problem. or, failing that, get them in a 'cave enviroment' for example, a crate with blankets/duvet wrapped around it, so that mum's body heat is trapped. What seems a warm room to us may simply not be warm enough for the puppies. Surely it's better to try heat, rather than losing the pups, to hyperthermia?
Jeangenie I know that I was just answering Blues question. I will just wait and see what the vet says

It can happen probably Sharon so don't think we are beating you up honestly :-) At least you have asked. Everyone can honestly learn from these type of threads I think..
We will all keep our toes and crossed this is the cause actually as they have the best chance of survivial rather than something sinster..
Fingers crossed.

but we did have a mild winter last year and early this year
I hope the wee ones are holding their own now.

I suspect they got chilled in the night as the temperature plummeted over Wednesday night, it was very cold Thursday morning. chilling is the main cause of lost whelps in the first days.
My breed usually get too hot and usually within about 4 days they are moving away from sources of heat, and any time it is a bit warm after 10 days they get very upset and hot.
they still have a heat pad until this happens and it is always on at night for the first three weeks even if they don;t seem to need it in the daytime.
Mine also have a cave like whelping box. I use a puppy pen and have a large bedspread over the top and sides so just half the front open (often draped with a pinned towel in the first days) for bitch access.

Not adament this is the case but just as an example as we are talking about it, I had a woman use my dog at stud recently. She lives in an old stone house which probably has great temperature fluctuations. She came down in the morning to a dead pup, the rest were cold, she put them all in front of a fire and the bounced back. She did lose another one that evening but 2 survived.
( Before anyone gives me grief :-D I went through everything with her, even gave her the book of the bitch and got my hubby to make her a whelping box, couldn't have help anymore really. It was sad though. The mother was a lovely bitch.)
The vet as been. The problem is Star hasn't much milk. She said the pups are warm enough now but the chill in the night coupled with the lack of milk was the problem.
We are feeding pups every 2 hours.
They do seem to have improved greatly. Vet says the outlook looks good for pups but I know things aren't forced to turn out perfect.
We will just have to be prepared to put in the hard work. I have a 9 month old baby too but with 3 teenagers in the house theres plenty of hands on.
The vet is a little concerned over Star she as a temperature and is a bit swollen inside. She has given her an injection and some anti biotics.
Hopefully all will be well.
Thanks for all replies.
You're a glutton for punishment :D :D.......a 7 mth old baby and preggy bitch, then puppies, baby and teens to look after, and puppies ready to go the week before Xmas......you don't like a quiet life :D :D just a good supply of matchsticks I think!
Pleased all is well with the puppies, fingers crossed it remains that way :) and that Mum is going to be OK too.
Good luck sharonb,
I know how much hard work it is feeding the pups yourself, I was shocked this morning when hubby said there was ice on the cars

(there wasn't they were just steamed up :-D ) but the temp has certainly dropped.
I'm sure the pups will be just fine now, at least your vet has checked them all over, which must be a great relief and Star has been treated so touch wood things can only improve, hope that mum can soon do all the feeding herself.
Best of luck.
Glad all is well with the pups.
