Topic Other Boards / Foo / Guitar strings anyone??

Does anyone know anything about guitar strings??  I've finally gotten my hands on two guitars - one electric, one acoustic - and I'm going to restring both.  They belonged to my sister (who's let me have them as she finds it hard to play them from Finland :D), and I know they've not had new strings in a looong time!

Trouble is, I'm a total newbie - violins I can do (well, a tad rusty but ish) but geetars are new territory!!

The only info I have is that the leccy says "CWG Winner" on the end and the acoustic says "Hondo".  Both fairly old I think, the acoustic is prolly around 15-20 years old, the lec slightly newer.

Can't wait to have them dusted and ready, I've been dying to learn for years now just never had my own guitar - soon as those strings are bought and fitted I'm off to find teach-yourself stuff! :D

goes to find guitar-playing husband

"What sort of strings have they got on already? The leccy will probably have standard strings; the acoustic will either have nylon strings for the thinner ones or possibly steel. If they're nylon, replace with nylon or the neck will warp. Look in your Thomson for your local specialist music shop and ask!"

My daughter plays and when we want strings, we have a brilliant little shop not far from us so the whole thing goes there and comes back almost straight away, I can't remember how much he charges but it's not much..to be fair I don't think he charges for fitting her strings, then eldest son who is the one who teaches her comes around and tunes it up properly!

Thanks.  How handy to have a guitar-playing husband! :D  They look to be all steel on both to me.  Think I'll play it safe and take them to a shop though :p

Tuning I can manage - plenty of practise on the violin, though I may invest in one of those little mini-harmonica type tuning things!  I did have one but it got losts in the mists of time in my old house. :p

I bought mine from this chap off ebay. he really knows his stuff, supplied me with exactly what I wanted when I told him make etc of the guitar I needed strings for. very friendly and helpful.
