I'm new here but have lurked for a couple of years now :)

I have an 18 month old bitch who is yet to have her 1 season :rolleyes: but yesterday I noticed a funny coloured discharge on the kitchen floor, so I did a tissue test on her vulva, and that too was coloured.
This morning, when I came down, there was more spotting on the kitchen floor, but none in her bed ( white towels :D ) also, it isn't red coloured, just a browny look to it

Do you think this may be the start of her 1st season or should I be looking at a possible infection?

It sounds like the start of her season - is her vulva swollen? If you're worried about a possible infection then definitely make an appointment with the vet. Better to be safe than sorry.

Not particularly no........I will keep an eye on it though...

Some bitches don't swell much.  If the discharge is pinky brown and doesn't smell unpleasant then I would say it is her season and not an infection.

Pinky brown it is!! I was beginning to think she was a barren bitch as her litter sisters both had their 1st seasons at 11 - 11.5 months, as did their Dam. ..........

.............I can now give some serious thoughts to a suitable match for her, now I know she is normal

My Stella is now 15 months and started bleeding on Wednesday night.  I was delighted because I have been waiting for the first season.  However, on Thursday there was no blood.  The dogs arent interested in her (all neutered but still life in the old dogs yet when my friend comes round with her ESS!).  Is this normal?  It was definite blood on Wednesday, a sort of reddy discharge yesterday and absolutely nothing today!!!  Stella being Stella this doesnt surprise me because she seems to work to her own agenda.  Is this normal with a first season?

I'd appreciate any help.

It does sound like this is the start of her season my girl did not have her first season until she was 16 months old so not too uncommon.

I think it sounds like her season too, if it is, her teats might get enlarged and she might need to wee more often, as well as her vulva becoming swollen and she shoul dbe cleaning herself more often. I have always found bleeding to be lighter on their first season, and if your bitch is very clean, you might not notice much blood at all. The only blood I noticed when my bitch is in season are a few small drops on the floor int he morning, but she soon clean it up. Yuck! :-)

Different for my girl's first season it looked like her throat had been cut she was very heavy but not so bad on the second season

My Rio's first season showed blood for ONE day only. We wouldn't even have known she was in had she not mated and tied with my neutered boy.

Well, she is still spotting........not alot and she is being very clean, lots of licking etc. not peeing more especially, but going to toilet in the strangest of places not her usual spots......

My other bitch, bleeds for England :rolleyes: even on her 1st season, so this lighter option from Lizzie is a welcome change :D

Hi Again

Stella isnt swollen at all and has stopped bleeding.  She is weeing more but other than that she seems quite normal.  She was very quiet on Wednesday night but fine again on Thursday.  My two neutered boys have had a good sniff at her bits and just walked away.  I'm perplexed!!!   What do you think?

Could be that the hormone levels were insufficient to get things going and she may come into season properly in another week or so.  Or the season will continue but be a low key affair.

Thank you.  I will keep an eye on things for the next week or two.  She is very clean; she seems to be cleaning herself more and more!!!!

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but while on the subject of first seasons I have a question about cleanliness. My bitch started her first season yesterday (oh yes, had to be since her first show was supposed to be today). Anyway, I saw an old post of JG's that mentioned something about "dripping like a knacker's truck" well that would be my girl and she doesn't seem to be very interested in her personal hygiene. Do puppies learn to keep themselves clean after a day or two or have you found they either do it from day one or are forever slovenly messes like mine appears to be. :-D I'm thinking of spreading a little honey around - joking!!!

My messy girl was better on her subsequent seasons than her first, but she was never very interested in personal hygiene I'm afraid.

Yep I have found the same they do get better either a bit into their season or on subsequent ones.

Myka was terrible and the bleeding went on for 3 1/2 weeks quite heavily.  She was kept to the kitchen as she was so messy.

With some of them I wouldn't know they were in season except when they get up after resting, s they are so clean, which is why I do the white tissue test when I am expecting them in.

Mikkis first season started yesterday, one week before the champ show I had her entered in :rolleyes: Although it seems to be heavy, in that she is a mess in herself, I haven't seen any on the floor or elsewhere so not sure if yesterday was in fact the first day? Nothing is swollen neither. The other two are keen to keep her clean Molly was horrid on her first season, a right messy little so and so and the amount she lost was frightening  - but after that and now she is sooo clean I have to check her all the time when she is due to make sure the dates are right.

Let's just say Milo won't be taking on that role! He's downright disgusted! LOL You should see the way he was looking at the conservatory floor before I cleaned it (he's always been a very clean boy, never steps in any dog mess when out or in play)

Sorry Mikki is missing a champ show Dee. :( At least I'm only missing a small, local open show. There's another one I can go to in just over a month.

Thanks, I'm gutted to be honest. Her first real champ show ( we don't count B'ham Nat ;) as she was just so full of herself) and she has calmed down so much in the ring at open shows that I'm convinced she would have got placed next week. Oh well :rolleyes:

You should have come to SKC Dee. A guy at our club entered his puppy there as his first show and won the class - then again it was the only entry. LOL Still, it was a positive first experience for him to win.

Shhh, Dee, he's a little embarrassed about it but Milo lost the family jewels if you know what I mean. He might never be THAT interested. :)

Lizzie is being remarkably clean so much that I wondered if she was having a season, but I'm still seeing the odd spot on the floor and now on her bedding too, so I guess she is :D
My other bitch is very obviously in season when it's her turn, blood everywhere! but she does do her best to clean it up, and she is helping Lizzie out too :D
