I'm new to showing in UK so have very vague idea of how it all works.
Just to make matters even easier I'm importing my girl I'm intending to show here!

I understand I need to get ATC number for her to be able to enter shows in UK?
Would anybody know how long it will take to get this number?

My girl will be coming to UK in the end of August and I would love to get her qualified for Crufts 2009.
I understand this does not leave us much time and many championship shows to qualify in.
Am I right thinking I can enter Championship shows with her even when she has not been shown in UK previously, she doesn't need to qualify for Championship shows in Open shows or anything like that?

I feel like a right numptie now that I'm starting to look into this all!
I have been to UK shows before so know how it all works on the day but I have never entered my own dog before and have not thought about these basic things!

I can see entries to Championship shows close few months before the show so I think really must get started with all of this now if I'm to show her this year!

You can enter a Championship show without qualifying elsewhere but you will need a ATC number before you can enter, so that would be your first task and I think there is a form for doing this on the KC site.

Ok, I'm probably miles out with this, so please excuse my ignorance ;-)

If you are importing a dog, then surely you will be re-registering it with the British Kennel Club? They will then issue a new KC registration certificate. Won't they? Then you wouldn't need an ATC number. Of course if the dog is just coming in for a show or two then I would think it would need an ATC number. Or am I way off base??

If the dog belongs to you and you are resident in UK you dont need an ATC number.  You have to register her with the KC, you should have an export pedigree from the country you are getting her from plus at least 3 generation pedigree, there is a form that can be downloaded from the kennel club site, to register your imported dog, you send this with a copy of export pedigree and 3 generation pedigree and then you will be issued with a KC number.

If you are actually importing your dog then it isnt an ATC number you need but to register her on an imported dog form. The KC are very quick to turn these around, but you cannot enter until you have applied for this so probably as well to do so now.

If you are importing your dog then you do not need an ATC, but you will need to register her with the KC on the full register. Full information & the application form are on the link BTW. Only dogs from abroad that are normally permanently resident abroad need an ATC. If you are domciled in the UK then she needs to be KC reg.

As soon as you have applied for her registration, you can enter her at shows before her KC registration is received by you.

No qualification is required to enter Championship shows except that the dog is KC registered as she is a permanent import

My friend was talking about showing and if my girl can be entered so I went on the kennelclub web page to check and under showing they have this info about exhibiting in UK...
So I thought I will need this ATC number as well!

As I said been daft as I thought I will need an ATC number as well as register her with UK Kennelclub.
We have the export pedigree etc sorted from country of origin so I just need to fill in the forms and off they go!

I am going daft too I thought you were only bringing the dog in for a short while.

I've never imported a dog, but a friend did. I couldn't remember how, or what she did about the registration, but I didn't remember seeing an ATC number (does that make sense?)

When is your import joining you? You'll be looking forward to her coming in ;-) :-)

Just a brief note - your dog does not have to pre-qualify for general Championship Shows. The exception is Crufts, where (unless it is a Champion already) the dog will need to qualify through general champ shows before entry.

My baby will be coming over in the end of August :) Not long to go now!
I have not yet entered her in to any shows but will need to do that soon.
I'm currently checking the shows and locations to decide where in England we will go and show our little socks off for the first time :)...

I'll also need to find a ring craft near us so we can practise a little after she comes home and learn how we work together.
She has not had any show training except had her mouth checked and being fiddled through by various people.

I have shown her once in Finland and was supposed to do 2 more shows there.
Unfortunately she had a course of antibiotics and in Finland due the antidoubing-rules she could not be shown as it was less than 2 weeks from the end of the course :(!
So we have started the whole "entered but can't attend" successfully already!

Naturally she will drop the gorgeous coat she still has on and start her first season right before the show we are aiming to go to here!
Or cut her paw which she did before one puppy-show we were supposed to go to...

Seems a long time waiting to bring imports in, our 2nd import is due in UK December just in time for LKA, so hope to get her qualified for Crufts then, although she will be shown in Holland by her breeder at the All Winners in Amsterdam so could qualify then.

Having imported my TT when I came back from the USA, what I did was got his ATC first, then I could enter shows before he was even in the country.  THEN when he arrived in the country I registered him with the KC, and once accepted (which was quite fast as he already had his ATC), then I didn't need to enter the ATC number on the entry forms any more.

Several people I know did not realise that you could get the ATC so you can enter them before they enter the country, so they waited until they were here, then registered them, therefore delaying entries!

So, yes, I certainly found it very useful to have the ATC first, then register my boy.
