Today I took Rory to Hawick Open Show, it was held at the same venue as Border Union Champ Show beautiful, except............. It stotted down with rain the whole day, I was soaked to the skin and so was the puppy. Well we won our breed class, Irish Setter Puppy (Yay) But no Best Puppy in Breed was declared, so therefor no puppy group, despite the schedule saying the show was judged on the group system.

There was no best puppy in show award, but there were classes for Special (group) Minor Puppy and Special (group) Puppy judged after the Gundog Group. We were beaten into fourth place in that class and beaten by a puppy that we beat in the breed class (different judge)

It took me some time to get my head around all this because I've never come across this before in 35 years of showing, is it a Scottish thing?

Very odd, perhaps it is. Well done on the win in the breed class.

I can't answer your question but wanted to say congratulations! Well done to you and Rory. :)

Well done Dawn, wondered where you were - it poured down at Lanchester too!!  I  always thought that a BoB AND a BPIB (if pups present) had to be declared.  I don't have any  of my Judging rules & regs seminar stuff here, it is all still in storeage, but I am sure one of our very knowledgable show sec. members will be along soon.

The rules for the Special Puppy would have been set out in the schedule and this would be why it would be called Special and yes it can replace a puppy group. I am myself doing a show in Scotland next week that has special puppy classes with no puppy groups and therefore best pup in show is declared from the 7 special puppy class winners but doesn't qualify for Crufts.  HTH

Don't know but Blackpool didn't have a BP in show either.

Yes that's what happened, I understand and accept that it was all quite correct, no rules were broken, and yes it was all laid out in the schedule, but what I don't understand is, why? Why do some shows feel the need to rearrange the format, who does it benefit?

PS thanks for the congrats, a little win gives you such a lift doesn't it. :)

Hi sorry didnt realise thats what you were asking LOL. Well the only thing I can see from a secretaries point of view is it sidesteps the need to declare BPIB and keep track of all the puppies in the breed classes. Also it avoids the confusion of  av puppy being able to enter the puppy group also.

I am not sure if Scottish Kennel Club rules are the same as the KC, I am sure in the UK you have to have a BPIB but you do not have to have Puppy Groups or BPIS most Championship shows don't although most Open shows do.

It is  something I have only come across with Scottish Open Shows so far.
