Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Which Class or Classes to enter

Just about to fill in entry form for a open show, now in my breed they have a open class only,
but then there are a v utility minor puppy, puppy etc at the time of the show my puppy will be 7 months old,
should i just go for a v puppy or should i also enter the open breed class.

i should nt enter open with puppy as when you want to pup pup in novice/maiden  if you were the only one in open and your win this will count  against  you entering in these classes

Enter your puppy in the AV Utility Minor Puppy as you can when there is no puppy class for you own breed. If you get Best AVU Puppy you can then go forward for the group (if done on the group or bpis). Goodluck and have fun!

This is where I would need to know how many people in the area are likely to show in the breed class, and whether or not you would lose the class if you don't support it :-( And also if you think you have a good chance of winning the AV class ;-) I try to support the breed classes if they have any, but then I have a breed that doesn't always have classes and we do try to keep any that we do get.

You need to go in the Open Class as you have to enter a breed class first if I'm right.  Also of course if there are no breed classes you have to enter AVNSC rather than just the AV classes to qualify to go into the BIS or BPIS if you win your class.

If you enter the Breed open and are the only or the highest placed puppy you will be declared best puppy in breed and be able to go into the Puppy Group or BPIS ring.

If you enter as above you can also enter the AV puppy class then if you win best puppy in breed you can withdraw from the AV class if you don't you can continue competing.

This is normally true, unless you have a puppy and no puppy classes are provided for the breed.

Veterans can also go straight into AV.

Your right M, if there is not a breed class for puppies you can ignore the breed classes and go for the AV instead. Sometimes it is a case of which judge you would prefer to give their opinion of your pup.

don,t think Perrodeagua is right though, dont think you can enter avnsc if you have a breed class even if it,s only open

Perrodeagua is correct if you have anything but a puppy anything other than a puppy does have to enter the breed class if there is one. However with a puppy you can enter the AV class instead if there is not a breed class for a puppy and you may progress forward from there is you win. This, incongruously, only applies to puppies it does not apply to juniors or anyone else except if you have a veteran you may enter any class confined to veterans without entering a breed class first.

All but puppies and Veterans must enter a breed class or a AVNSC class before entering any other class. However if there are breed or AVNSC classes for veterans then they must enter either their breed or AVNSC if they wish to progress to group or BIS, AV Veteran does not count it you wish to enter group or BIS but AV Puppy does.

I really am not sure what happens if your breed has a class but not for a puppy but there are puppy classes for AV Puppy and for AVNSC puppy, I assume you would have to enter the AV Puppy as I believe to enter the AVNSC classes the breed must not be classified at all. Who the hell writes these rules, perhaps they should try enforcing or more to the point understanding them.

As has already been said, with a puppy you can choose to do either class. However if you know that there will be other dogs of your breed entered in the class, then I would enter the Open breed class and hope for best puppy in breed.

In fact that very scenario happened to me last weekend. Only an Open class for Irish Setters so I enter Rory at 6 months and 4 days, and he is placed third, beating two adults, and being declared Best Puppy in Breed.

Good Luck, hope you enjoy the show.
