Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Getting the white bits very white
- By suejaw Date 24.05.08 20:52 UTC
Hi,

I need some advice in getting the white fur really white, my dog in places has an off white colour since i bleached it to get it white from grey. Well i haven't achieved my goal yet. I have tried the purple shampoo's and this hasn't helped it either.

I was windering if there is anything i can use that will permantly bring the white back again, he does have very white roots if that is any help.
The stain is from a colar getting wet over the winter and hence the inital grey stain across his chest.

I have read abotu chalk, but this only appears to be temporary.

Many thanks in advance

The breeder we bought our Bichon from said that she washed her dogs in washing up liquid before the shampoo to get them really white. I must stress that I have never done that myself, and I don't know if it's even safe to use - so maybe check on the internet, but I just thought I'd pass it on.

I doubt you will as by the sounds of it your dog wasn't white at the start!!  I wouldn't openly admit that I'd bleached my dog if I were you.  I've PM'd you with something that I was advised to use on my dogs by a Bernese breeder and it definitely worked.

Thanks guys so far, as for the bleaching this was something that was advised to me to try from a OES owner/breeder who swore by it...
Its not getting any whiter so i don't intend to do it anymore, as its harsh on the coat and skin...

He did have a white coat to start with, i have ruined it by the collar he was wearing, the rest of the chest is brilliant white..

I don't know if you show your dog or not but have you read this?

That's why I mentioned I wouldn't be quoting that I was bleaching a dogs coat.

To the other poster I'll PM you now and it's something that isn't bleach or anything like that!

If the roots are coming through white it might be something you just have to wait until the part stained by the collar grows out. When I wash my blenheim Cav I do him all over with normal dog shampoo and then go over the white feet, tummy & tail with whitening shampoo, but you said that wasn't working with your dog, so I'm not sure I'm afraid.

I feel that you may have to wait until the stained area grows out. I have a bitch who has managed to get her coat stained and I have been advised of so many ways to remove the staining but I am not prepared to take any risks with her health. I know of people who use washing up liquid and a scrubbing brush to clean their dogs and I have been advised to use Oxi-Clean but this is not a road that I am prepared to travel. I will wait patiently for her to blow her coat and grow a new clean one and feel that you may have to do the same.

There is a certain whitening shampoo on sale at show and on-line that has ( i heard from several people) turned some white dogs grey. I had bought this product but have thrown it in the bin as I didn't want to make matters worse. So be careful what you wash your dog in.

I have Papillons and the dogs can be hard to keep white due to staining from urine.
I use Doreen Paiges BANISH intially used 3 times daily for the first week to reduce staining already there and going down to once at night for maintenance.  Dogs don't mind it at all and I have had good results.

Not a quick fix though.

Joan

ps I haven't had any damage or texture change to dogs coat using this product.t

I knew that you couldn't leave anything on their coat as in white chalk, though saying that i have seen at crufts people using boot polish on their Dobe's claws, which i thought at crufts would be a no no..

I think i'll have to let it grow out then and just keep on with the whitening shampoo.
Thanks for everyones input and for the person with the Sammy i like your idea of letting the coat blow out as you have a totally white coat to contend with..

hIYA..........Ihave had success with a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice just whack it on the stain
and let it dry in, then brush out it removed a red stain from my buff american cocker after 2 goes.......i did put a snood over the dogs neck though, because as it dries it drops off everywhere but fine if its a nice day and the dogs outside!
hope it helps

Hair is covered in scales and discolouration can get in behind these scales when it will be come impossible to remove, it could be that your earlier attempts to remove the stain from the collar have in fact cause damage to the tiny scales on the hair and set the stain in instead of removing it and now no dry cleaning will remove it because it will not reach the area that is stained that area being under the scales.

Are you sure that it wasn't oil being applied with a boot brush, as I have seen my Friend do this, using baby oil to make the nails shine.
- By suejaw Date 26.05.08 08:55 UTC
In response to the Dobe's claws being painted on with shoe polish, this was from the ready to go stuff which you just dab on, it was clearly boot polish from the brand sticker on the tube...
This was in the main hall by the benching areas, so i was surprised to see them do this..

Anyway i am just going to leave the stain alone and hope in time when he sheds and then grows a new coat through it will disappear.
I'll continue with the whitening shampoos as i would when normally bathing him and thats it, don't want to be accused of doing something to him thats not allowed...

I use banish as well with good results.  Takes time be patient and work against the hair growth.
