Funny thing is I,ll be fine when I,m actually doing it

I am the secretary of a Canine Society and we put on a Companion Show each year.

They are super to watch and the people that enter are all in good spirits and take it on the chin so to speak.

Enjoy your day and the experience-I am sure you will get your hands on some lovley dogs-use it as a learning curve.

We do around 14 classes and the Fancy Dress class last year was so good-people made a real effort-by the way the beardie won dressed as a Nun !!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of compainion shows does anyone on here know what list the judge has to be on to judge one , as i have rung the KC and they are not sure, one of them thinks that you have to be on the B list and another one told me a CC judge, and the last one told me you don't have to be on any list.
In the rule book it does not say either.

I am reasonably sure you do not need to be on any list, hence some clubs getting local celebs to judge etc.

Anyone can judge a Companion show or a Limited show. Both are good places to start judging at

just to confirm anyone can judge companion shows but if you want to get people coming back next year get someone who knows one end of a dog from the other :-)

Do they?  I've been to shows where the fattest, unhealthiest dog has won the Best Condition class and it's happened a number of times.  I've also been called for taking my champion dogs to companionship shows, seeing as they can't be champions in this country and one said dog was supposedly a Spanish Champion and she came over to this country at 12 months age she couldn't have been!

I also had some nasty things said to me by organisers about these people coming with their unusual pedigrees blah, blah, blah.   I've always enjoyed going to companionship shows over the years but these days many people seem very anti-pedigrees.

That may well be because champions can't be shown at a Companion Show, don't think it matters what country they are a champion of it is still against the whole idea of such shows.

If I have misunderstood your post I am sorry, but I have never found a problem taking a young pedigree dog nor a veteran to such shows.
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 01.05.08 13:24 UTC
Hi Nova

Yes you have misunderstood!!  I DIDN'T HAVE ANY CHAMPIONS ENTERED IN ANY CLASS AS THE DOG THAT WAS CALLED AT MANY COMPANIONSHIP SHOWS AS BEING A CHAMPION CAME TO THE UK AT 12 MONTHS OF AGE SO SHE COULDN'T BE A CHAMPION IN HER HOME COUNTRY AS SHE WAS TO YOUNG.  She wasn't even shown over there.

I dont think there was any need to shout!

Ive had some dirty looks and 'its not fair to show pedigrees'... when showing my saluki x greyhound at companion shows!!!!

Ill undoubtedly get some when I take the Hairy Fairy to some companion shows this summer but knickers to the lot of them.

I do get annoyed though when nothing is said about disgustingly fat dogs or dogs being dragged around in the heat of the day and harrassed by children, does really put me off 'fun' shows (and oh the irony.. that 'pet' and 'rescue' people seem to think pedigree show dogs get a rough deal, ive NEVER seen a dog treated at an open or champ show anywhere near as badly as ive seen MANY treated at fun/companion shows!)
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 01.05.08 15:37 UTC
Wasn't shouting at you just at people in general as you nver know who's looking and it does upset to have untrue comments thrown at you, especially at that time we couldn't even show at open shows etc!!
- By Nova Date 01.05.08 17:15 UTC
Sorry perrodeagua but you said "I've also been called for taking my champion dogs to companionship shows, seeing as they can't be champions in this country" and I thought that you meant what you had said, although I did have difficulty understanding your second paragraph.

Shouting at me does not make matters clearer but your explanation does, I think

Surely the main point is that the Companion Show should be FUN and helping to raise money for charities.
I have organised many over a period of 25+ yrs. if I got a 'Moaner' I would politely remind them of this.
As for Pedigre dogs there are set classes for them ,so they are more than welcome. Adog does not have to be K.C. registered to show at Companion show , so many of them will be pets. Surely this is our chance to try & help those who maybe don't know as much about their dogs
- By Brainless [gb] Date 03.05.08 09:58 UTC
I have put my overqualified dogs in the Novelty classes just to support the show, and usually don't place.

Of course the pedigree classes are just that and any dog that is not overqualified (CC, RCC, JW winners usually) can compete, be they family pet or the next great hope.
