If anyone would like to steward at an open show on June the 7th in Peterborough please P.M. me. As always I could do with some more and thought may be someone out there may need some more stewarding experience.

Alas I'm away then but I love stewarding, do post again if you need help for other shows in the future.

Calling the name of the next class, checking and giving out numbers, calling for any missing. Then indicating where the place winners are to stand (the judge will say where she wants them or you should ask before start of judging), handing out rosettes and cards. Marking on the stewarding sheets and the judge's catalogue which dogs were placed and which were absent, making sure the judge sees no dog names. Checking if any puppies are in junior classes etc and making sure the judge knows there is another unbeaten puppy to challenge for BP if so. Making sure the judge has signed her judging sheets and giving the extra copies to the show steward after each breed so they can pin them on the boards etc. There are seminars you can go on - I really enjoy it, it's almost as much fun as showing! :-)

Very well put Lucy, one other thing check the ring has nothing that could damage or distract the exhibits and pick up or stick down if there is anything untoward, and man the poo bucked and sometimes mop. Really a job between a clerk and a cleaner :-) Think the main thing is you take on the smooth running of the ring and let the judge get on with the judging. Agree Lucy I enjoy it to you can learn a lot about breeds other than your own and judges are often happy to talk to you and tell you why they placed as they did.

Oh yes, forgot to mention checking for rubbish and mops! Yes, I like it when the judges talk to me after making their decisions, it helps me understand judging better. Also I keep an eye out for people who look unsure and make sure they know what they are doing, that's partly what I meant with the puppies in Junior bit, I've often reminded someone they have an unbeaten puppy and they've been grateful. Oh yes, also if it's a big class, go round and tell everyone when the last dog is being seen so they can get ready, and warn them if the judge is just shortlisting.
