Does anyone have a list of breeds which don't have teeth checked when in the ring - the only one we know for sure is a Pug!
- By Nova Date 24.04.08 07:24 UTC
Now that is something I would like too, can be a problem if you are asked to judge a match, you have to ask if you are not sure as a dog unused to having it's mouth inspected may be alarmed, which is not the idea of a match particularly if that match is at a ring craft club, where people are bringing their youngsters to gain confidence and experience.

pekingsese i was told, beascuse of their breathing problem.

how can that be. to the breed stander if the judge cannot see the rigth bit for the breed.

if we had that in fcr i could show chase with his twisted jaw from the outside he look good but god open up his mouth it looks like he been in a car crash

Hi, yes that is why I'm asking - my daughter is judging a Match, and last night I suddenly remembered that there are breeds whose teeth are never checked - would bulldogs be another one?  Am thinking maybe breeds with flattish faces?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.04.08 08:24 UTC
Surely all dogs should have their mouths checked as after all all standards describe the bite.

It may be a forgone conclusion that mouths are awful in some breeds, so judges tend to ignore them, that doesn't really mean they shouldn't check them surely?

Minor mouth faults apart a dog with a seriously malacluded mouth won't be able to chew properly, will wear the teeth abnormally etc surely a welfare issue, and one breeders shoudl be adddressign to minimise.

Well, the only reason I know is because we were at a show a couple of years ago, and the judge checked a Pug's teeth - well, the owner kicked off big-time afterwards, said the judge should know you don't look at Pug's teeth etc etc...!

This seems to be a matter of custom and would suggest your daughter asks the exhibitor to show the teeth/bite and then wait for the reply. Embarrassing if you are told they are not inspected but better than upsetting a young dog. It is like the breeds that are shown head to the judge, like the rest of it is of no interest, Staffies, Peks, Bulldogs come to mind, by the way think Bulldogs teeth are looked at, providing you can get down that low. Then there is the Yorkie box, what is that all about? Very irritating in an AV class I would think.

In my own breed it is only the bite that is inspected by most breed specilists but all rounders have been known to count teeth.

Bulldogs have teeth checked but only just un cover the teeth its not as wide as checking a rotties whose front and both sides are checked.

The Pekingese don't have their teeth checked because there is no description of their teeth or bite in the breed standard, there is a description of the lips though., not because of their breathing problems

Teeth need checking in any breed that has a description of the teeth &/or bite in their breed standard

Hi Nova,
my daugher will be asking the handlers to show the teeth anyway, as the Match is judged on handling overall and not the dogs, but she doesn't want to get it wrong and ask someone to show teeth when it's not the done thing!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 24.04.08 09:21 UTC
No idea, but if she asks the handlers to show, her response to anyone saying 'this breed isn't inspected' could be 'I know but I'm judging your handling including how you show a bite'! (You can tell I'm used to quickly covering up errors can't you!)

Tell Daughter best she is embarased rather than a young dog upset, she will soon forget :-)

Infact Lucy, you nearly hit the nail on the head!

Now some handlers having dogs who don't show teeth in breed ring, do train to show the dogs teeth in handling classes (As how can you asses handlers showing teeth if one person doesn't do it?)

On the other hand if they don't show the dogs teeth I would expect to hear knowledge from the handler saying "In this breed the teeth and bite are not within the breed standard and therefore not judged" or something along those lines in a polite mannor and therefore sow they know the breed they are handling ;)  If they don't say it polite then they will not be as highly placed depending on the rest of their table and pattern work and of course the competition!

I can think of two handlers who have two different non teeth breeds who have taught their dogs to show teeth, however if a judge goes to do it themselves..... LOL

Hi Rox!  Yes you are right - the secretary of the breed club has got Japanese Chins, but she teaches them to have their teeth inspected anyway, and they were actually checked at Crufts this year.  She is saying the same as you, that all dogs should be able to have their teeth shown when it comes to handling, so now we know!!

Cool! Reminds me of the time that our grooming college people asked how I would deal with someone complaining about the dodgy lines on their wriggly dog and I said something like 'I'd tell them he was very wriggly and I didn't want to stress him out by forcing him to stand for a perfect finish, but I was sure as he got used to me and the process it would all be fine'. Like I said, good at fibbing myself out of sticky situations! :-D

The Pug teeth thing is primarily a point of the pugs themselves, I think - most pugs are extremely resistant to having teeth examined (or cleaned! :) ) and a judge having to put up with a pug wrestling match (which may result in a spectacular pug moult, as many throw out hair like a snow storm when upset / angry) is not a pretty sight!  The odd judge ( open show, Variety class or group) who has tried to force one of my pugs into it has been met with such tightly clamped jaws and flailing claws that however much I try to help the judge gives up.  When I have politely  asked a struggling judge  what they woud look for if they could get to see the teeth none has been able to answer ;)  Main point to remember about Pup teeth is that you should not see them when mouth shut!
