Where do i start... at the beginning...

I took Wallace and Hunter to a show today...not saying where (but the CD'ers I met...ssshhh ;)  ) this requires saving face on the judge:eek:

no breed classes... so entered the boys in all teh AV Gundogs and AV's applicable... 1st time out for months for them.. just to get them back into the swing of things.... B UT

I have no idea who the judge was... a little dottery old lady... would hate to guess her age... didnt wear glasses, but positive she needed them lol....

She NEVER looked for the bite in either of the boys, or test the coat and she never went near the 'apparently correct man's bits' :P

Ii had a friend with me, as both both were in same class, I handled both and ran both, friend just stood for the line up.... soo...

1st boy went to stand for judge.. she patted his head,,, very nearly patted his shoulders and asked me to run up and down (as you do) and she sent me back to the line up... so... I handed the boy over to my friend and took my other boy off him... to stand for the judge... and she said.... have I met you somewhere before:eek:... I said yes... and smiled... again, she patted and asked me to run.... we did...

THEN... she placed the dogs... she called out the breeds of dogs as she tapped out shoulders... my boy Hunter was the Lab... Wallace was the """" Flatcoat"""""?????

ahem... the CD'er who met Wallace today... please tell me .. he doesnt look anything like a flatcoat... does he:confused: :P :P

under any other circumstances, I would have left the show.. but this was so funny, I just had to take them into the classes I had entered them into.... the faces of the ringside spectators were superb,, everyone of them trying to stiffle fits of the giggles...

My freind text another friend at home to google the judge and find out her breed... we got the info.. and discovered that not one of her own breed was entered under her ... I have a suspicion Iknow why :D

Honestly she was a lovely dottery old soul, and we had a lovely day (not a good day show wise) ...

I do hope this isnt the pattern set for the rest of the year lolol :D

Sounds like someone should have gone to Specsavers!

Oh well, looking on the bright side, Wallace may have a promising career as a FCR if the whole Lab thing doesn't work out for him :D :D
- By Lea Date 06.01.08 21:03 UTC
mmm and theres me on another thread saying FCR look NOTHING like Labs and thats from a non show person LMAO
Well at least you got a giggle!!! and good for you for making the other judges laugh by going into where you were sent LMAO

thanks Gillian.. Wallace is ALL Lab.. a good old fashioned type ;)  and Barbara.. most definately no fat... (sadly cant say the same for Hunter (blush) )

Teri... of topic a little... I was judging FCR over in Ireland a few weeks ago... and found them way too heavy... even for what some would term 'show' type...

and everyone knows I want a FCR lol... have I over compensated with Wallace :P :P

That's nothing at least it was the same colour.  A top British judge at LKA a few years ago, told my friend who had a brown and white Spanish Water Dog to bring out her Bolognese!  Wouldn't mind but Bolognese come in one colour and are about 12" smaller.  I won't name the judge but as I said at the top of this he is one of the countries top ones.  He also started telling me that he knew the person who imported my breed very well and was telling me all about the breed, when I had to tell him that yet again he was talkinga bout the wrong breed
- By kayc [gb] Date 07.01.08 11:59 UTC
 Dianne, it beggars belief sometimes... although there are a couple of breeds I am not too sure about.... but have the sense to keep my mouth shut lol
- By Astarte Date 09.01.08 21:56 UTC
perhaps he was wanting to be bribed with food:confused:
- By LJS Date 07.01.08 01:00 UTC
Wallace a FCR :eek::eek: Never ! :D :D He is definately all Lab ;)

How is my favourite boy :D
- By kayc [gb] Date 07.01.08 12:03 UTC
oh Lucy, he is just wonderful :)  still a little way to go till he fully matures (his lines can take up to 4 years) but he is blossoming ... hard to believe he will be 2 years old next month

Just wish I could have taken him to Crufts... but his breeder is judging the dogs this year... typical
- By peanuts [gb] Date 07.01.08 12:22 UTC
I was at a show where the gundog group judge asked the lady with the flatcoat puppy to leave as newfies should be in the working group !!

Did an exemption some years back..... 'bring your long coat pointer out please.........the owner of the Large Munsterlander was not thrilled at the first place.

Seriously though at an Exemption show it is not to be wondered at as the judge may be an expert in no breed or only their own.

On the other hand we should expect better at Open show level especially in the variety classes.  No wonder so many people save their pennies and only go to championship shows where competition is better and hopefully they will gt a competent judge.  The petrol costs the same to an Open show as it does to a champ show,
- By kayc [gb] Date 07.01.08 18:12 UTC
I agree... and do admit that I enjoy doing the variety classes at open level under a good allrounder... it wasn't a dreadfull distance to travel, and one of the smaller shows which I like to support, but we lost the breed class this year (I was the only entry for the last three years) so rather than not support, just because we lost the class.. I entered in all the varieties I was elligle for... it was fun... but still quite sad...

The majority of my shows this year will be championship shows, but with 2 pups coming out beginning of March, will be doing a few opens too... might give the varieties a miss unless I know, or know of the judges reputation... ;)

As you say... costs all add up...

I was at a show a few years ago with my pups. The judge said isn't it great to use these shows as ringcraft  ;) When the adults were in the ring she said 'Oh, is that what they are supposed to look like when they grow up?' The male won the ANVSC class, and got RBIS :D  How can you give a dog such a high place when you don't know what it is? I hope she learnt more, but I'll never show under her again......
- By tooolz Date 07.01.08 21:10 UTC Edited 07.01.08 21:15 UTC
Went to a show some years ago with young boxer male where he won a hot class and got BPIB beating nearly 100 other pups. This show was judged by a VERY famous all-rounder who has done BIS at Crufts. Her write up was positively glowing. Just a few months later I made the mistake of attending a show with the same pup ( still in puppy) under her at our local open show. Small class( 6) made up mostly of pets and novices. My boy showed his socks off and was still winning well up 'til that point.
Guess who got binned?   Go on guess?
- By Moonmaiden Date 07.01.08 21:19 UTC
One of my Beardies went BIS at a local Limited Show, in the very early 1970s under a Rough/Smooth Collie ticket judge who also gave CC's in other working breeds & the next year gave his first Beardie tickets. He was also a Ch Sh Group/BIS judge.

Nothing unusual in that, he won the pastoral & working classes(prior to the split into the current two groups) & was pulled out as BIS from the unbeaten dogs. The only thing was the judge called out "Madam with the Afghan":eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek: There weren't any Afghans in the line up  & he then walked towards me & again said directly to me this time"Madam bring out your Afghan" What did I do ? well the KC rules say you cannot impugn the judges decision so my dog ended up as BIS. He even got a write as an Afghan :confused: He wasn't a big Beardie in fact he was very small when compared to some of today's dogs

When the judge was giving tickets the next year we did not take our baby Beardie bitch nor the dog

"He even got a write as an Afghan " PML your poor beardie
- By Sam-Jo [gb] Date 09.01.08 19:02 UTC
a little dottery old lady... would hate to guess her age... didnt wear glasses, but positive she needed them lol....
Sounds familiar!  I think I was in your class and I did have a Flattie   I was the one that said 'did she say me' !  She was a funny one! the judge not your labs!
- By kayc [gb] Date 10.01.08 15:34 UTC
Hi lol.. yes I did see you.. didnt realise you were Sam-Jo though :)
- By Astarte Date 09.01.08 21:57 UTC
still though, i don't consider myself an expert but i can at least tell the difference between them!
- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 10.01.08 13:16 UTC
At something of a tangent, there is a puppy in our latest puppy class, probably about 4 months old, whose owner says he is a black Labrador, but he doesn't look like any Labrador I've ever seen. He's a lot smaller than the yellow Lab which was in the previous puppy class was at that age, and his face is much narrower, and his ears don't flop down like a Lab either. I thought it was something like a Patterdale terrier!! Could this be a working type Lab, I don't think I've seen any except the show Labs, or is it a Lab cross and this bloke's been 'done'. I'm not going to say anything, I was just chatting to a cocker owner and she agreed it didn't look like a Lab to her either. (Mind you, she didn't realise she had a working cocker until a show cocker joined the class a week late!)
- By kayc [gb] Date 10.01.08 15:49 UTC
Hi Lucydogs.. cant comment on the pup.. but I have seen pure Labs looking similar to what you have described...

But there is no mistaking My boy for a Flatcoat lol... a hulking great 40kg of solid muscle and a very strong Lab head :)
- By Lily Mc [gb] Date 10.01.08 16:17 UTC
Has anyone seen the black and tan Lab pups on the front of OD this week yet? I know they're working bred, so would be slighter build, but they just look so wrong in that colour.

M.
- By Astarte Date 09.01.08 22:00 UTC
just looked at your gorgeous boys-how did she confuse them with a flat coat???they look nothing like them! (appart from the general retrievyness)
- By kayc [gb] Date 10.01.08 15:55 UTC
Thanks Kim.. I think they are lovely too (very biased lol ) and very un-flatcoat like :D

My Tia was once mistaken for a Flatcoat when she was 11months.. but that I could understand.. Her head hadnt broken, and she does has a slightly flatcoatish look about her face... but her critiques come back.. 'A True old fashioned labrador head'

For head.. I have never been able to reproduce Tia... and its her head and expression I love the most... ;)  although the girl I kept out of this litter is similar, she is going to be a little broader ;)
