Is this is any good?
Does it actually make their coats any cleaner?

Bought some today and used it, it makes them smell nice but don't think its made them any cleaner.

Hi

I use chalk and/or talc regularly for in between bath clean ups, it's especially usefully on bitches pants or wet feet and feathers!!!  The idea is that it soaks up any wet patches (mud, wee etc.) and can make brushing out more effective.

I also use in when stripping, sometimes the coat is so clean the comb or your finger & thumb just doesn't grip very well.  The chalk or talc adds a bit of resistance making hand stripping much easier.

My advice is if it works for you use it if it doesn't don't.  Just make sure if you use it just before a show, brush it out REALLY well.

It's not supposed to be a substitute for bathing!

Cheers

Chalk is a useful cleaning tool when used properly. Sometimes it appears not to work instantly but over days, It seems to release the dirt from the coat. Only thing you have to watch with chalk as it does seem to colour the coat ( in white coats) is allowed to get wet.

I stopped using it all together due to this reason as I used to always chalk when I hand stripped.

My preference now is  is Corn starch ( NOT corn flour)  I don't like baby powder as it is also calcium carbonate  , but Johnsons do a Calming Lavender & Chamomile
one that is NOT chalk calcium carbonate but Zea Mays which is pure corn starch, this is excellent for coat cleaning.

Here is the details you will have seen it on the shelf. Please note though this is the only product avaliable in the UK from Johnsons that is Corn starch the others are  talc/calcium carbonate.

Thanks for that Pam. I still use chalk, but will try the Johnstons, I am sure Tracy uses that on her baby Summer.

Finding it harder to get chalk now anyway.

Hi Irene,

I think the chalk blocks etc are find to do little touch up but I find it very harsh on the coat now, certainly compared to using the Lavender one. Tescos and Sainsbury always do them on deals Buy one get one free regularly so it ends up just over a £1 a tub. :-)

I use Vitacoat Grooming Powder on my tipped cats to whiten the coat & give it some resistance, it has optical whiteners in it too.
