Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Will not move in the ring

I have a fantastic blue roan cocker dog. He is just over 1 year. I bought him of a very good breeder when he was 10 months old, he had never been shown and he had been kenneled all of the time. The breeder had a very good reason for selling him to me.
He has always been very car-sick and I am working on this and giving him Sea-legs and a product fron Denes. He showed very well untill 2 weeks ago when he refused to go in the ring, I then carried him in and he was very reluctant to move.
He will stack up like a star but I still have problems moving him.
I can move him at home or at the local park but in the showring he just digs in his heels. He is not a nervous dog trots around outside of the ring at a show just fine, will just not move in the ring.
Any help would really be appreciated
Thank you
Nick

Unfortunately some dogs just hate showing and will do anything to stop. I, like many others, have had to retire a dog due to this. It's not fun when you feel like you are dragging a sack of potatoes round the ring :( ;)

Lets look at this differently though. Has something happened that might have spooked him in the ring? Has he had a fright, in other words. Does he move better outdoors, or in a hall? Do you go to ringcraft with him, and if so how does he behave there? If not, I would start taking him as there might be someone there who could help with him. Sometimes baiting helps, though that might be difficult with a cocker :)

I hope you can do something with him.

I do think something spooked him, though I don't know what. He just didn't want to go in that ring. It was outside and he had showed outside before, since then he just will not move in any ring.  I'm afraid I don't  have a ringcraft class near me and as he is so travel sick, to drive for an hour would really stress him.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   I have a sneaky feeling he is just playing me up and really would prefer to be left at home!
Cheers Nick

How far is the place he was spooked from you? Can you take him to the site and see if he reacts in any way?

If there isn't any ringcraft nearby what abut any other type of class? I know it's not the same but what about an agility ring? They have ropes and a few other bits and pieces and might just help him adjust to being in a ring again.

Just a thought.

I dont know if you use mats in the ring, but this is what I do with a pup that is nervous in the ring.

I got some of that stuff you put on tables to things (like tablecloths) dont slide.  It comes in a square mat, that feels kinda like the top of a grooming table, or mat.  I first just put one down, then gave treats if the pup stood on it.  You may have to use a couple to start out with, since you have a bigger dog (I show min pins)
Then once the dog is confortable, on just the one mat, then I go to three, where the dog has to take steps to move over it.  I stand on the other side, and call come!  and guide the dog over with treats.
You may be thinking, why use the word come, if you got to move beside the dog in the ring.  The answer is this, you want the dog to forget about the mats, so if it is doing something it already knows, then it is easier.
Then you put the squares down the hallway, and say heel.  Walk the dog up and down them.  Soon, once the dog is moving ok in a heel, add some speed, eventually going up to the speed you show in the ring.
Some dogs dont like the feel of the mats, and thats why they stop moving in the ring.  I have used this, and it works for me.
It does take a while though, with my pin, it took almost a month before she would walk on the mats.  Then I took her to a show, and she worked fine.
Sometimes also, if you are stressed, the dog feels that even though you are trying so hard to hide it.  The dog will react this way, especially if you are anticipating trouble.  Go in thinking, who cares if I get dumped?  I know my dog is the best.  Then you and your dog will feel good, and it may just be that.

Hope this helps!

Breeders say that if a dog doesnt want to show then he from bad lines and shouldnt be bred from (It has been said on here by members) I dont agree with that statement as this boy is scared of something or just point blank refusig to do it, so why would that make him unbreedable from?
Do you mean from the getting him seen by other people side of it or.........?

Just curious!! :p

Good sound steady temperament is vital in a breeding animal. Nervousness can be passed on to the next generation, just like bad hips or cataracts.
