Hi
Sophie is a black and white tibetan terror ooops sorry terrier but her black bits now have a hint of brown. She scratched out some of her coat and now the new bits are black and she looks a bit strange with the different coloured hair. Any ideas about getting her black back to black

The brown hairs are usually dead hairs ;) She will need them groomed out. Are Tibetans hand stripped? If you take the hairs between your finger and thumb and gently pull away the hair you should see a difference after a while :) Be warned though, it is a continuous job, one that your bitch might not enjoy. Don't try to do all her coat in one, you will get sore, and your bitch will get fed up :D

Is your TT a baby? Many of the black or part black dogs go brown during the baby adolescent stage when the coat is very soft. The coat will start to come in true (whatever colour it is about to finish) between 18 months and 30 months when is fully mature and the black coat will then look black. There is very little you can do about it unless you want to go down the route of black shampoos etc and to be honest unless, and you and your dog, have the patience of a saint, you will find it a very hard job covering all the black and not splashing the white. I would not hand strip a TT but you do have to be constant with the grooming.

More than likely too much sunlight bleaching the coat red. The old coat will have the red hue and the new coat will be blacker.

I am having the same problem with my dog, he hasn't dropped his old coat and has a mixture of a lovely black shiny coat and a dull red/brown colour
I am using a comb to try and get rid of it - slowlyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Hi
Thanks for your replies. T.T's are not hand stripped and Sophie is now 2 years. Its really just the tips that are brown and I think it is the sun that has caused it. Would the black shampoo really not be any use?

Have a look at Hub International, they have about the best black shampoos although Plush Puppy have just brought one out too. A tip I was given recently, which certainly helped smarten up my new TT's black coat, was to spray Plush Puppy spray and shine on his under coat (this is where it is most brown) and it will lie flater allowing the new black coat to sit on top.
