Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Why does my puppy prefer cat food??????

I have a 17 month old male Jack russell. Just recently he turns his nose up at his dog food. We went to a friends house and he managed to get hold of the cats food... the bowl was full and he wolfed the lot down!!! I have never seen him eat a whole bowl at once!!!  Is it bad for him to have cat food, as he seems to prefer this to his own.

My pup prefers cat food too - its because its not his

I dont think cat food is too healthy for a pup, he is better off on a good quality puppy food.  What food do you feed him ?  Have you tried naturediet ? at 17 months he would probably be on the adult version, they do loads of different flavours and its excellent for fussy eaters.  It can even be warmed up in the microwave to make it even more irrisistable ;)

Hiya.... He was really loving Pedigree Chum, the meal pouches. They do a good variety with pasta and veg and stuff in them, but he wont seem to eat them now unless i chop ham or chicken in it, and even then, he just picks the ham or chicken out. After he has my friends cat food, i bought him a puch of felix, and again, down in one!!!!

He has you well trained then ;)

I would put his food down, if he doesnt eat it within 10 minutes pick it up again and dont feed him again until his next meal (that includes treats !!) he will get the hang of it quite quickly that if he doesnt eat his food will disapear

Good advise ClaireS. As you say the puppys the one whos done the training LOL.
Donna-I would advise that you decide whaat YOU want to feed and stick to it...as Claire syas he'll soon learn. And as for cat food....many dogs love it because it smells very strongly.....but it is not at all good for dogs to be fed on.
