Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / first time feeding raw

hi after so many good reports on the benifits of feeding raw , i gave my pugs raw chicken wings for the first time this evening, the only thing which is bothering me is they have taken about an hour to eat one wing each, is it normal for dogs to take so long over them? or will they get better with practice?

Lucky dogs, getting so much pleasure from a meal! When my dogs get wings, one crunch and they're gone!

jeangenie are your dogs a large breed?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.05.05 18:19 UTC
Dalmatians, so medium sized.

Think yourself lucky, they are spending time amusing themselves and making their meal last longer.

Unfortunately I have large dogs and I am afraid they hardly touch the sides as they go down.

A whole turkey drumstick lasts 2.5 minutes at most (700gms worth) :D

yes but if they need to have 4 or 5 wings each for a meal that could mean 4 or 5 hours eating it!!!

I may be wrong but I'd have thought that would be way too many wings for a pug ...

how many do you think would be suitable i though that was about the right amount, does any one know?

A pug weighs about 8kg, so I'd reckon no more than one per meal if you're feeding anything else as well.

I agree JG your dog should be eating 2 - 3% of its bodyweight in food per day.  Bearing in mind that a large 3 joint chicken wing weighs circa 100gm I would have thought the amount you are feeding is an awful lot for a pug per meal.

Eg a 30kg dog would be eating between 600 - 900 gm per day on average.

To put it into perspective my adult Weim bitch finds 2 per meal sufficient for her needs unless she is working hard then she will get 4!

Obviously dogs differ in their temperament, metabolism etc but I am trying hard to imagine a pug eating 4 - 5 wings per meal per day.................. with great difficulty.......!

ok thanks for the info, well at least it wont take so long to eat their dinner now then, as this was the first time feeding raw i was'nt sure chicken wings dont seem to look much compaired with half a tray of nature diet which is what each of them usually have for an evening meal.

Calorific density will be different in all foods and volume should be ignored, it is not a reliable indicator of nutritive value................

Really it might be wise before embarking on raw feeding to read up on it a little.............?

I have a staffie x who has just ONE wing per meal (in fact his entire days menu is usually, half a tin of pilchards, a spoonful of veggie mix and then a wing for dinner -- and he is the fattest of my dogs (wearing two teeshirts i think!)....

My beddy x whippet has two or three wings, plus half a tin of pilchards n veg, and tatty ole saluki x has one tin of pilchards, veg and about 4-6 wings depending on the size of them.

Depends on the dog but id have thought a pug would be fine on just one wing, unless they are the really really tiny scrawny ones from the supermarket....

Hi Luvapug :)  I get the frozen wings from Tesco too.  I have an Afghan Hound bitch who has no more than 3 wings per meal.  She usually has one RMB meal per day consisting of chick wings or rabbit or poussin or duck or lamb/pork ribs (just some ideas!)  In the evening she may have hearts, fish, mince, offal, eggs etc etc - all depending on what I have got hold of that week.  I dont weigh anything any more!  In the beginning she put on a bit of weight so I cut back, I use my eye and believe that I now have it just right ;)
