ive got two dogs, one whom ive just adopted, he is a lovely chap but eats everything in sight or smell.
which means he has been eatting my original dogs food as well. how can i manage this as my original dog eats her food in two attemps but has been unable to with the male finishing it off for her.

due to this he is also a little over weigh and on a special diet which eats happy but then comes back for more. i am at a lose cos this is also causing my bitch to lose weigh!

Can't you feed them in separate rooms?. Also, in multi dog households, dogs usually learn, eat it now or it will be gone! I wouldn't have any of that two attempts thing, I would just put it down and 10 mins later remove the bowl. She will soon learn if she wants it she must eat it now but if your new boy is in another room he cannot get to it can he? :-)

we have an open plan on the down stairs of the house so are unable to do that saddy.

someone has suggested to try feeding them 3 times a day instead of 2 so there is less for the bitch to eat at a time, but i am unsure of this as she is eight year and stuck in her ways (also im most likey to soft with her as she had a bad start to life) and how to introduce the third meal as there meals are at 11 and 5 o'clock so i dont really wont to feed her later than that and she shows no interest in food before 11

Can you not feed one dog in the garden while the other is eating inside?

Or just stay with the dogs with one on the lead if necessary so that no stealing can be done.  Hey presto!

Can you not feed one dog in the garden while the other is eating inside?

This is what i do with my dogs and the....cats  My cats will pick a little of their food and then move over to the dogs bowls and push in and eat my dogs food and they just let them :D

So the cats stay outside and eat,and they cant come back in until my dogs have finished eating!

easy fixed ;)

Well I would just stand there until they ahve finished and not allow the new one to pinch the girls fod until she has finished.

I feed five in the kichen and they all know which is their eating place and I won't allow them to investigate the others dishes.

When I ahve had a new pup or had a 9 month old back I didn have to keep watch that they didn't take liberties.

If your bitch doesn't finish her food in oen go give it do her at anpother meal time, a lot of dogs are fed two meals a day instead of one, and you could split his meals also.

Doesn't take long to stand over them while they eat.

As has been said your girl will soon realise that she must eat her food in a few minutes or go without until the next mealtime.  You will soon find that it will be gone within a couple of minutes.
