My puppy is Wheat/Gluten intolerant. he is fed PAH puppy complete and is fine on that, but give him a biscuit type treat and he becomes red and very very itchy and will scratch till he breaks the skin.
Can you suggest anything i can give him please as a reward or at bedtime as a treat that is not his normal food and that won't set off the scratching.
Thanks

You can make liver treats with gluten free flour (just make sure to add eggs to the mixture if you don't want floor tiles :D )
Wilkinsons liver treats are gluten free
Dried tripe sticks are gluten free (just tripe rolled and dried, stinks appallingly)
Dried meat from pet shops (comes in a sack and is small enough for treats)
Cooked chicken
Cooked ham/lamb/beef (but some shop bought has wheat flour on it)
Dried fish
don't give sausages (unless they're gluten-free ones)
Burns also make wheat and Gluten free dog food and treats
Burgess supa sensitive is also wheat and gluten free ( available at PAH)
Hope this helps :D
I'm pretty sure the JWB Cracker Jacks are Wheat/Gluten free as all their food is.

JWB is not gluten free it contains Barley which also contains gluten and would cause problems for any dog who needs to be Gluten free.
Gluten Containing Grains - Wheat, Barley, Rye. Oats contain a substance similar to gluten and in some individuals this is not tolerated as the body reacts as if to gluten.

Hi Bev,
Is your dog intolerant of wheat gluten, or, wheat and any type of gluten? I believe that all grains have some element of gluten. Rice, however, is generally well tolerated.
I make my own treats from ground rice (Sainsbury) or rice flour (found it in Tesco). A couple of cups of ground rice or rice flour, one egg per cup of rice, one small jar of baby food (any meat& veg kind without onions, or ingredients your dog does not tolerate). If you are really generous, add a jar Shippman's meat paste (only one I found without onions). In fact, with rice as a base you an add anything your dog will like to flavour it - finely chopped or pulsed veg (use leftovers if you like), can of Pilchard's, leftover roast that you whiz in a food processor - anything your dog likes or you want to use up.
Mix it up so it forms a slightly sticky dough (add a little water if needed), refrigerate until slightly chilled, pat it out on your kitchen counter, cut out into biscuit shape of your choice, bake at about 170 in a convection oven (a bit higher in a regular one) until they are are lightly brown underneath. The thinner you make them the crispier they are - I make them thick and soft, one of my dogs hates to "crunch". Freeze what you will not use in more than 4-5 days.

Careful almost all meat pastes contain wheat in the form of RUSK and will not be suitable for gluten free diet.
more information about gluten free diet here
http://www.coeliac.co.uk/if you click on medical information there is info on the diet :)

Hi Bev,
Not sure i read your first post correctly :p Does PAH kibble contain Gluten, but your pup can tolerate it(i thought it did) Or he does well on it because it does not contain gluten? I've probaly confused you more than i am now

PAH is wheat/gluten free and he is fine on that.
He was on chicken and puppy meal when i got him and scratching like mad. Vet checked him and could find no obvious cause for his scratching. i changed him onto PAH for my convienience and the scratching and redness went. A couple of weeks later gave him a couple of biscuit bone treats and very quickly he was scratching and drawing blood.
Left treats off for a couple of weeks as very suspicious now itching was diet related and then last week gave him another treat. He again began scratching wildly. Stopped them and he is fine again. So deduce from this he must be wheat/gluten intolerant as is fine on PAH but any treats containing wheat/gluten sets him off.

Bev,
A company called Scotties do treats. I buy the chicken treats - which look to me like roasted chicken necks. My dogs love them.

Nature diet can be cut into chunks and dried slowly in the oven (avoid the recipes containing tripe though - take it from one whose tried it ;))
