I have read in several places now that garlic is a good deterent to fleas. I have been giving my two 2cloves between them a week. Is this a safe amount, should they have more? Or is there another natural way to deter fleas?

Mine get garlic powder and average about a teaspoon a day, which is around about a clove. However powder has less oil in it so may be slightly less effective but is also a lot easier to keep/prepare. I think it would be quite difficult to overdose on it unless you ahve a very small dog and are very kean on it!

It does help keep fleas down, need to keep the immune systme in good shape too as healty dogs are less likely to get any of these things in great numbers. Herbs such as pennyroyal and wormwood help keep fleas and worms down and can be given as an infusion or used about the house as can Lavender.

I feed a fresh glove of garlic to my dogs each day; if I am travelling I give Dorwest Garlic and Fenugreek tablets.

Ive not long started adding garlic powder to their dinner so dont know as yet whether it actually works :)

I give mine "kyolic garlc capsules" some dogs can get upset tums from too much fresh garlic :)

I also give brewers yeast,i used to give it every day but have cut down now,i give it for the extra B vitamins, protein etc. Altho i would not advise giving it to a dog that has any sort of allergy. The dogs love the taste so i sprinkle some ontop of their food as it also encourages them to eat, sometimes my dogs would rather play than eat

Lel what kind of garlic powder do you use? I only know of the garlic salt you see in supermarkets, which kind do you use?

There are many contradictory articles on giving dogs (and horses) garlic.   I stopped giving mine garlic because of them.  It may well be safe at certain levels, but there have been no studies which show what amount is appropriate for dogs.  A few articles I read said that dogs may become anemic from garlic, so I decided to drop it from my dog's diet.

Onions are in the same plant family as garlic and are now well known to cause anemia in animals (dogs, cats, monkeys, horses, etc.)

Frodo
just a little question, where did you get the yeast in powder form from? :)
I can only find tablet form.
I dont give my dog garlic, as she is always kissing me and i really really hate the smell and taste of garlic lol

What's wrong with plain old garlic capsules from tesco? No crushing, no smell (& no pinging lol):-)

- By frodo [au] Date 08.05.05 00:26 UTC
Lazydaze i also give a kyolic garlic capsule when i remember  every second day or so :)
- By lazydaze [gb] Date 08.05.05 09:17 UTC
Hi frodo
Is kyolic garlic for dogs or is it a brand that us adults would use??
Did you read what stacey said about the garlic??
Thats when i start to worry lol, as shar-pei seem to get any thing lol.
I once bought a lovely dog biscuit tin full of dog cookies from tescos for treats, and ended up over the vets because she had a reaction to them :(

Mine get a garlic capsule each day from the health food shop.  Spoke to very pleasant women in there when I happened to mention that they were for the dogs.  She told me to buy the smelly ones and not the odourless ones as it is partly due to the smell that the fleas hate.  Never had a flea since! By the way the smelly ones were cheaper than the odourless ones so she did herself no favours by recommending them.

Thanks all for your posts. I will continue to give garlic 1 a day each I think and maybe get some brewers yeast.

:-)

I've used the odourless one on my long coated dogs for years and never had a flea problem :)
