Don't go by age go by appetite.................
Tohme,
The pup in question is a Lab!! He would eat all day if he could!
I had an idea it was about 12 weeks that you cut them down, but something I read suggested waiting 'til about 4 months. I was unsure what to do.

Hi I have gundogs too, so I do understand! :D
Difficult to say, I tend to move them when it just feels right..............
Not much help I am afraid!

You cut the number of meals down but the amount will be the same or even slightly more :D I am sure you knew that of course just for the clarification of anyone else reading :D

Hi,
Surely its the amount of food taken in in a day that matters not how many meals it is served in. My puppy prefers three smaller meals a day than two larger ones but his intake is the same. Just make sure you dont overload the puppys quantity, as yes you are some puppies will eat all day long if you allow them to

My Labs are on 4 meals a day until 16 weeks,then 3 meals until 6 months,then 2 meals daily.
Sheila.

PS, As the meals are dropped i increase the others.

How many meals a day does matter for young puppies. More frequent meals helps to keep blood sugar levels steady throughout the day. Also, young puppies digestion is not as robust and older dogs - feeding the same quantity once a day vs. split betweeen several meals may result in diarhea from eating too much at once.
However, every puppy matures at a different rate, so there's no hard an fast rule about when a puppy goes from four meals a day, to three, to two and then for some breeds, one meal a day.
