(Admin this is not an advert as i have homes for all my pups, just a genuine question ) my pups are 4 weeks 3 days old and still not interested in weaning. Ive tried them on everything, puppy porriage, soaked JWB, scrapped beef, pedigree puppy, you name it, but they wont take anything should i be worried??
I would give it a few more days, then dont let them on mum for a few hrs, then try with the food, even if you have to feed them indivdualy or smear it on their faces, at least it is a step in the right direction.
I had this with my Jozi's litter, she was doing them so well that up to five weeks they were really only tasting food, but once Mum decided she would feed them less they started eating more of what I was offering.
I would offer them food four times a day individually, if they eat a teaspoonful then great, Mum can eat the rest. You will at some point find they will start to get hungry as their needs increase and Mums milk supply can no longer meet the demand. Also natural curiosity and maturity will ensure this also. Go with the flow :D
Not sure about your breed but I have a small one also and they never really start till they are about 4 1/2 to 5 weeks so I wouldn't worry if the bitch is happy just now.
With my own medium size breed I ahve started the weaning process as early as 12 days when they weren't gaining as well as I would like, but I usually start just before 3 weeks. This litter that wouldn't eat had me quite flumoxed, but boy did they make up for it when they did get going :D
As far as JWB goes, I reared my last litter on it and found that they enjoyed it more to start with if i soaked it well and then blasted it with the blender. Made it easier to lap up. HTH
