Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Brewers Yeast

When anyone has asked about suppliments I have noted that nobody mentions Brewers Yeast as being used. Is there any reason for this? The book I read reccomended its use. Gabi has taken to Barf like a duck to water but does seem to be more hyper. Could this have anything to do with the brewers yeast?

I give brewers yeast as a flea preventative and for the b vitamins(garlic didnt work for us). I dont think yeast would cause hyperactivity, however you could try omitting it for 1 week to see if it makes a difference??

I think people are afraid to use it because of the fear of yeast allergies.i've found this to be true when a dog is fed a food with insufficient animal protein.Lack of animal protein, specifically the amino acid L-Lysine produces the "allergy",which is in itself a definciency in disguise.? taken from wendy vollards book.

What is the main element of your dogs diet? eg. chicken, beef, tripe.

Are you reading "give your dog a bone"? This book is one of my fave raw feeding books :)

Feeding Gabi, Chicken wings, Oxtail and Pigs Trotters for RMB's. The rest, minced beef, lamb and ox hearts, liver, pork chunks. This is combined with 3oz of veg per day. At present no tripe but have it on order. I also give sardines, egg and yoghurt once a week. I suppliment with vit c, kelp, brewers yeast, (garlic and fenugreek and mixed veg from Dorwest for her waterworks) and digestive enzymes.

well it sounds as iff your dog is getting a great variety, nothing in there is making me think hyper, but different dogs react to different things,it could be any one of those things  OR it could be she's feeling so good thats she's got loads more energy :D I'm leaning more toward the latter ;)

You could try her on only one protein per week, slowly adding back one at a  time to see if one particular thing is making her hyper.
Lordy,i hope this is making sense to you :o

I doubt very much that a particular protein source would be the trigger for hyperactivity unless of course the dog had an allergy to it.  TRUE hyperactivity is very rare and generally triggered by dairy, cereals, colourings, preservatives etc unless there is an underlying medical condition.

A bit confusing as she has been rescently been spayed and spent 10 days on low activity and confined with an Elizabethan collar. Has anyone tried Scullcap & Valerian tablets to calm?

Yes, they can be very successful with some dogs.
