I am thinking of trying Chappie as my Labrador has a sensitive tum, but wondered if I should be adding it to a mixer?Any thoughts gratefully recieved!

There is no need to add anything it is a complete food. I found my dog with a sensitive stomach was alright with Shapes so, when she was on Chappie, 2 or 3 (she was small) of those afterwards helped clean her teeth and give her a bit of crunch to enjoy :)

While visiting our vet last week with our new Black Russian Terrier pup - we asked about the diet which the breeder had put her on - he recommended we change to JWB due to her being 3kilos under weight - during the conversation he divulged that he does not rate these fancy diets and highly recommended Chappie - he said he is of the 'old school' - mentioned it contained lots of fish, it's stinks and that is what most dogs love about it -plus high in nutrients!

Well the stink is certainly there! :D Chappie has been recommended for decades. Unfortunately my dog, being small, did not eat a whole tin at a time so we always had stinky open tins in the fridge  which drove me to trying her on Beta which was also recommended to me for tender tummies. This suited her well and she continued on that for the rest of her 15 years, however it had not suited I would not have hesitated to return to Chappie although I might have tried their dry complete.

Try Burns fish and brown rice - Chappie is mostly just water. I put my bitch on it and she lost weight.

Dogs need water too ;) doesn't much matter if its already in the food or along side what matters is what else is in the tin :)

my dog lost weight when put on tinned chappie. When I changed her onto Burns Fish and Brown Rice which I mix with the AMP meats she started to put weight on, and because she has pancreatic insufficiency it has suited her down to the ground.

Jen...my Lab is already on Burns fish and rice!! He is permanently hungry and is eating other dogs poo, and this is getting worse by the day! As he suffers from colitis type problems, other dog offerings are the last thing we need him eating!!! I'm hoping a change to Chappie and mixer will fill him up and hopefully put a stop to the poo eating! Apparently, many dogs on Burns seem to poo eat!!! I will just add that my Cocker is also fed Burns, and does not have this problem so will be staying on it as it is great for him!
Thanks to you all for your help.

I've always found Chappie to be an excellent food. The tinned (I feed it with a plain terrier biscuit meal, although it can be fed on its own) is especially good for dodgy digestions, and I've fed the dry complete version to my dogs for about 10 years and have no complaints.

I know a few dogs on burns who poo eat. My theory is burns contains an awful lot of rice, hence it is low in protein. In essence this food is high in starch and fibre but low in protein, dogs need the latter more than the former and will know doubt go out and look for it elsewehere if they are not getting it at home,in your case your dog is trying to get it from other dogs poops

You could try adding more meat to your dogs diet to try and up the protein levels he is getting, hopefully this will remedy him trying to seek it out elsewhere.
Diets high in rice(soluble carbs) have been linked to pancreatic problems, colitis etc.,so my vet informs me.

But surely the protein content is marked on the packet. ALL commercial dog foods contain more carbs ie grains than meat, and grains do have protein too, although incomplete. Burns has no lower or higher levels of protein than most other foods bar Naturediet which works out at 40 -45% protein.
The reason dogs eat poop is not for protein levels, just because there is all that undigested grain in there; hence why they find horse manure so attractive! :D

Ah, ah, ah, Liberty
Now you're just trying to lead me totally astray - anything in a glass that's a darker shade than rose (except perhaps Southern Comfort ;) ) gives me a helluva sore head.
I may be befuddled but I ain't totally barmy  been there, done that, not playing :D :D
*sulking* ;)
more for me than lol, must try n save some for chloe and JG...........oh bugger
liberty

That's why I have to relieve you of some of your ribena, liberty. I have to protect you ... ;)

Hi Teri, I am talking about the same Lab! The problem is that our vet practise has more than one vet! One young vet mentioned the probability of IBD and the senior vet has said he's sure it was a bacterial infection, more than likely picked up from sniffing around mess!! Really we are none the wiser, but obviously want to put a stop to the poo eating!! Thanks to all for your help.
Whenever any of my lot have had a bit of a dodgy stomach, I've always found Chappie excellent in helping everything settle back down. :)

A friend's dog got bloat and afterwards was put on a special tinned diet by the vet. This was very very expensive (about £30 a tray and he ate 3 or 4 tins a day). The vet told my friend that tinned Chappie Chicken and Rice was identical, and the dog lived until 12 on Chappie Chicken and Rice with no further stomach problems.
