These are too skinny and hard. Need to bulk up as she has Anal Gland problems. She has been on Barf diet with great success except for this problem. She has 20 ounces of RMB's,3 ounces of veg and 9 ounces of other ie. minced beef, heart and liver mixed. Does this sound right?

Perhaps you could add a little bran to the mix.

Hi Gaby - are those weights per meal?  How much liver do you add?  I would maybe lower your RMB ratio and up the muscle, maybe using other muscle types as well.  Do the hard poo's trouble her?  I once read that hard poo's are desireable for dog's with anal gland problems as it gives them a good (and proper) squeeze?  If she is clearly in discomfort I would, as mentioned try lowering the RMB's - I feed about 40 - 50% RMB, 20% muscle, 20% other (fish, eggs etc) and about 10% offal and poo's are fine but if I deviate from this slightly I can see it in the poo ;)

PS  Vit C can help loosen a firm stool.

Gabi has 3 ounces of liver at the moment as I know this can make dogs loose when first introduced. I am increasing this bit by bit. The book I read said 60% RMB's but I guess all dogs are different. Gabi is not in discomfort with her poops but I read another thread which said poops have to be bulky as well as hard to discharge Anal Glands. She hates having them emptied at the vets so anything I can do to help would be great. I will try the reduced amount of RMB's and up the muscle meat and see how it goes.
Thanks to all
Pat

Good luck Pat, you will find that all the books read slightly differently...Some vets cant even agree on whether or not heart is a muscle (which it is of course ;))  I was talking to a friend the other day who has started to feed her dogs raw, she is so confused by all the conflicting advice (as I was in the beginning,) however you will eventually get to a place where you are happy and confident in what you feed, and you will know as it will show in your dog.  I am so happy with what I feed and the effect it has had on my dog that I would take some serious convincing to change it!  Yeah the books may say 60% - but that doesn't work for my hound, too much gives her constipation, so I bulked it out with more muscle% lowering the RMB and she is fine now - give it a try.
Sarah :)
