Our 14mth Border collie is off her food. She always has been a fussy eater, She has allways been thin but did eat at times, now she just about wont eat anything even fresh meat. She is drinking and had a slice of chicken this morning but would not eat another. She is now very thin but still has loads of energy runs for ball etc, her coat is shiney and has a wet nose. This situation has been for a couple of months and we are thinking of taking her to vets this week. Any advice as to what this might be.

Take her the vets first!

It could be that she wants to earn her food of you like. If the vet says everything is ok, you could try a kong with dry food, to make her meal times more interesting for her.

HTH!

p.s, im not really up on BC's. Hopefully someone who is can tell you something better! :)

Gonzo, for someone not up on BC's you have hit the nail on the head :D

The only way I could get my BC to eat at that age was to use the food as treats (assuming you feed dry complete).  First of all try it as a bit of a game, throw a piece of food away from you, if she eats it call her and throw it in the opposite direction, keep going on that for a while, then throw in a sit or a down, anything to make her think she is earning a reward.

If her coat is shiney and she is well in herself I wouldn't worry too much.  Mine still has fussy times and somedays she will hardly eat a thing, but for some unknown reason the food tastes ok when used as a reward.

Tip:  Feed it from your pocket rather then a bowl.

Good Luck

Definitely a BC trate me thinks this fussy eating.  One of mine is, one isnt.  Using the food as a reward definitely works.  I just pour out what I give him for his tea and just use that going through the recalls, sits etc etc.  We also use it for teaching tricks.  My eldest did go through about five days of not eating and had just literally started to hate his food (he never really liked it that much anyway) so I have recently changed it and he is eating it like no tomorrow.  I also feed a bit of naturediet just for a bit something else other than dry kibble.

not quite that bad but we used to use about half of it and yes that does take time but at least he eat it then.  Since the changing of his food no longer necessary
