I am rather peeved, I have just looked at the back of a packet of 'Puppy Markies' from Pedigree and it's boasting that the things are enriched with extra Calcium for strong and healthy bones, am I right in thinking this is the worst thing you can give a growing large breed puppy?

I am going to check the nutritional composition of treats I give Kobi a lot more closely in the future. It's a minefield feeding your pup all the right things isn't it?

It's a marketing ploy.   Many people think more is better and if they see something has added 'whatever' they may be more inclined to buy it.   Other pedigree products [and other makes too] may equally say with added '******'.    Notice they don't say 'With added 'chemical poisons in the form of colourants etc' which may make you dog ill.

I'd ditch the markies and make your own stuff.  Or give them a chicken wing instead.

they can't be that good for pups as you can't give them until they are 4 months old!

My Sibe's been eating chicken wings since she was 4 weeks old - no harm done whatsever :D She love a bit of banana or a unsalted almond as a treat too.

Commercial dog treats are generally diabolical; full of added sugars, salts, colourings etc.  Would not touch them with a barge pole.

You would be better off as Seddie says feeding chicken wing, or make your own treats from cooked liver or heart.

Hi Sarah

In a well balanced and varied diet your pup should have sufficient calcium.  Dogs need calcium but in the past people gave extra via supplements (I imagine many still do) but it should not be necessary.  I am sure there are many things worse than markies for growing pups :D
