I would really appreciate some advice, I have a 8 month old cocker spaniel who I would say is a fussy eater, he is on Arden Grange mixed with a little rice and some fresh cooked chicken (will not eat arden grange on it's own) he does on the whole like this mixture, however I have noticed that there is a patten to his eating, he will eat his arden grange etc for about two weeks and then go off it all (including fresh chicken) - would it be advisable to have a fast day say ever two weeks? I am going to try some malted kelp tablets which have been recommended to me as he does need to put some weight on.  I would appreciate some advice as I have never had a dog who eats so little. Has anyone else had success with the malted Kelp tablets?

Hi Wendywoo,

Cockers are not my breed but I've certainly been put through my paces over the years with BSDs who are notoriously faddy eaters ;)  I've usually found with youngsters that it's best not to give in to them if possible  (of course there's always the exception  determined to be an anorexic!)  Can you try adding a little of something like sardines (drained) or green tripe to his complete food instead of chicken & rice?  Usually the smellier the better.... also either would help add weight more so than chicken

I know some people who have had success with kelp tablets but haven't tried them myself. As to having a fast day, personally I would not do that with a youngster - although it may be someone will be able to give you a positive feedback on that.  IME fussy eaters don't really care if you starve them or increase their exercise to "work up an appetite" - I've not known either course of action to work in my own breed :(

I think Dorwest Herbs (from memory) do something other than Kelp for poor appetite - might be worth a visit to their website http://www.dorwest.co.uk

HTH, Teri :)
