I have a fifteen month old Setter that was in the car with me when I had quite a serious car crash.  Before this she went into to show ring going up to anything, and anyone, loved a lot of fuss.  Since the crash she is very frightened of strangers both in and outside the house.

As when I walk the dogs it is usually where we very rarely meet anyone, this wasn't discovered until we went to LKA and she freaked out completely under the judge and wouldn't let anyone outside the ring touch her.

If strangers come into the house, she wants to go into her cage.

Any suggestions of helping her overcome this problem.

Did someone other than you, get your dog out of the car after the accident? If so she may associate strangers with her recollection of the car accident. This could be why she has become so nervy. I'm no expert, but  IMHO, I would suggest going back to the drawing board, and try and introduce her to people gradualy, to let her see that nothing nasty is going to happen. Perhaps try walking her in more populated areas?

I suppose you need to go back to basics, like having a new puppy or a rescue dog.  Ease her back into socialising slowly, walk her down quiet streets, quiet villages, vets surgeries, and slowly work up to walking outside schools, in busy towns and only let people she knows well approach her for a while and gain her confidence by giving her very yummy treats

All the very best, Hayley

Thanks for the suggestions, she was taken out by Ali and some other people, but there were people crying and rushing about and loads of police etc.  She only went out to have her hips x-rayed, ironic isn't it.

Cheers
Chris
