Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / female humping male

I've twice recently caught my female GSD humping my male boerboel,
both are about 3 months old now, and in the beginning the male did the humping,
which I ignored since he's the only male I'll have on the property for a while,
I plan to get 2 more females next year, and was hoping to avoid any dominance fights
amongst my dogs, I have 2 kids, so this is crucial to me, and I suspect that once
the male weighs closer to the 80kg's they average the 2 of them might fight,
unless this sort of thing passes and she gives in soon.
when it comes to food/bones there's no doubt he won't tolerate any attempts
from her to approach, and he only leaves her food alone because I won't
tolerate him eating from her bowl, but otherwise he's extremely placid, and during play
he's happy to lay down and paw her away or nibble at her legs or tail while
she goes for his neck instead.

anyway I guess I want to know if there's anything I can do to discourage it,
both dogs are pretty confident, the female undoubtedly more so, she barks at all
the bigger dogs we pass when walking

It is normal behaviour, but if you are not happy for it to continue teach the bitch to leave. It is unlikely that the dog and bitch will fight but when you get more bitches the likelihood of bitch on bitch fight is fairly high. You do not say the age of the bitch and if she is spayed, that would help us to give more advice.

ah thanks Jackie, thats a little re-assuring, I'll let it be, but you've just raised
something that bothers me quite a bit,

>when you get more bitches the likelihood of bitch on bitch fight is fairly high

thats exactly what I want to avoid, I thought with more males I'd have a problem,
do you suggest another male and female?

>You do not say the age of the bitch and if she is spayed, that would help us to give more advice.

they are both 3 months old, roughly, and the female has not been spayed yet, but
she will be before six months I believe, will double check with the vet

I asked about the bitches age and if she was spayed because spayed bitches often become more dominant and sometime aggressive.

The squabbles between males are soon forgotten but if a bitch takes a dislike of another bitch, then they never seem to forget. Dogs will have a set to and will stop when you intervene but bitches if they don't get on will be so intent on killing each other that you will have to step in and separate them, for ever in most cases.

As to two 3 month old pups mounting each other it is play and if they were mine I would ignore it.

One other thing I would wait until your present 2 are over 2 years, best 3 year, before having any more and then only one at a time. JMO.

thanks again Jackie, I'll consider more males instead then,
and about waiting 2 to 3 years,
I'll be weighing everything up again mid to late next year

Sure when you have been through the teenage bit you will be wanting a bit of a break.
