Hi, I have just posted this message on "dog bit daughter" and I found this as a very intersting subject.

My puppy is 6 wks old and I wonder when do you start training her commands, including "LEAVE". She knows only one so far. She likes to play with my hands and she has very sharp baby teeth, so I taught her not to bite them, but in Russian language, and she knows she cannot bite me or do things when I say that coammand. So when should I start teaching her to leave her food, toys etc? And all other commands?

Thanks,

Alina D.

I've never found it neccessary to teach negatives.  If I have given a dog food then I wouldn't take it away any more than I would remove my husband's dinner from in front of him when he was half way through eating it.  As for toys, I teach retrieve which enables me to have any toy I wish with my dog's blessing.   Sally

I know a few doggie friends in the states teach their dogs in a different language to their native tongue - the owners that is not the dogs lol.  They say they do it to prevent the dogs responding to a command from someone they don't want taking the dogs, many of them do work security and I have been to a show in California where the police had imported Belgian shepherds and all of the dogs were spoken to in Dutch for commands only - they also claimed it stopped a criminal giving a command the dog might respond to.
