Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Bones again

I have got a bone for Dylan from the butcher's. He kindly cut it up into 3 pieces for me. I gave a piece to Dylan (only when I'm there to supervise, and not for too long) which he loves. But for how long can I keep giving him the same piece of bone. It's getting a bit smelly. Not that that is bothering Dylan in the slightest......

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

The smell may be awful to you....but dogs love it!!

One of mine dug up a bone the other day, that she must have buried ages ago...as far as I know, it doesn't do them any harm, and they do seem to prefer 'older' bones! (My Mom's dog loves cheese...she buries it, then digs it up a week or so later, and eats it....maybe she prefers it more mature!!)

Take care

Lisa

The problem is that he brings everything he wants to eat/chew into the lounge near his crate . When the bone was fresh, it was bearable in the house (the carpet is old :) ). After a few days, it has begun to smell, and the large black flies are taking a keen interest. Urggghh! :wrinkled nose emoticon: :)
If you think it is okay to leave it for him, I will try to make him keep it in the garden. Will it still be okay when the maggots are crawling on it? Does it become even more apppealing then???

And urgggh to the cheese thing as well!

Thanks,

Sarah

Before I stopped giving bones, the old dog which I had at that time used to bury them in the garden, digging them up months later and bring them in. I've seen them so alive that they almost walked out of the room on their own!

He never seemed to find them revolting!!!!

Best wishes, John
