Topic Dog Boards / General / Tailgate Guards

Does anyone have any recommendations for a manufacturer of these?  Looking at MMG, Barjo and Guardsman at the moment but open to suggestions.  Have a preference for one that doesn't need vehicle to be drilled but important that 3 dogs amounting to around 65-70kg in total can't dislodge it.
Thanks in advance, Teri :-)

I've used all of them, all have been rattle free and sturdy enough to hold the borzois back when small fluffies walked past. When I get a new car I just look round and choose on price and lead times, they're all good.

Edited to add all of mine have needed screws screwed into the car, latest one from MMG only needed screws at the top, it clips into the bodywork at the bottom of my C4 grand picasso, may not on every type of car. If you didn't want the car drilled I think you may need to go for a cage instead but of course you lose space then, and I personally don't think they are as good as tailgate guards because they could in theory be lifted out.

We had a Barjo (no drilling required) for when we had a Volvo (scrapped few months ago). 3 or 4 Malis couldn't dislodge it and it still looks as new as it did when we bought it years ago.

Thanks Jane, I've had all three of them in car cages before, a tailgate is my choice this time and all seem to be similarly priced but I'm needing reassurance on their efficiency!  That's very helpful, Thanks :-)

My barjo had to be screwed in Marianne, and I've just looked at their website and the current one for my car still needs screws, it must depend on vehicle make.

All 3 have been silent and strong, if they're equal in price I'd chose the fastest delivery :-)

Thanks Marianne, I didn't know Barjo did that type so will look into them further.  Good to know!

I've had several Barjos over the years, none needed to be screwed in because there were existed holes in the car (done by the manufacturer and had little stoppers in). But looked at the new Volvo (wishful thinking!) and there aren't holes any more so drilling would be necessary. The one I had in my Golf years ago had to be drilled.

That's right, our previous 2 Volvo estates - going back over 20 years - had tailgates that had 2 'prongs into the roof and just slotted in the bottom but the latest car needs drilling at the sides for a tailgate, not something I'd attempt, and as my youngest is a chewer I've opted for a cage which is smaller all round so less space for the dogs. My preference would still be a tailgate though. Have stuck with Barjos.

Have a look at Barnesbrook too Teri. I have a car crate made to measure for my car - rattle free and good quality and Dave who owns the company is brilliant at making exactly what you want. I had the doors made taller to enable H  to jump in without risking banging his head on the opening and also had to have the crate built to accommodate an annoying eye bolt fitted by a previous owner. As my car comes in two versions and due to my specific requirements he sent me a cardboard template to try in the vehicle before I ordered the crate - and once ordered it came with the guarantee that he would take it back if it didn't fit. When it arrived it was a perfect fit and utilised every  inch of the available space.

He makes tail gates, dog guards etc and is very approachable and everything I have seen that has been made by him has been very high quality at a very reasonable price. Well worth an enquiry :-)

I've had both tailgate guards and cages. The guards do give more space but if your dog is a barker then the side windows can get scratched and slobbered on! And if your dog is large then the roof lining above the window will get ruined, I know cos my ratbag Roscoe did just that to both sides. I switched to a cage and covered the sides so he couldn't see out as people walked past. Now I have a van that is caged into 3 compartments and has no windows so problem solved. My guards were made and fitted by Mick Tozer and he did have to drill holes in the body work.

I agree give Dave at Barnesbrooke a ring

Thanks everyone, all input appreciated :-)  I will definitely Google Barnesbrook Liz, personal recommendations are great!

Definitely don't want a crage - we already have a large double car cage for travelling to shows (OH's vehicle),  I'm not concerned they'll cause any damage it's simply a security measure for preventing escape when I open the rear door.  My new 4x4 has a traditional boot door opening upwards whereas the previous one opened out to the side.

Great info everyone, cheers x

Thanks Jane, apologies I've only just seen your edit re all being screwed in place.
Guardsman can definitely supply a tailgate with fixings which are hand tightened - these appear to be metal and look robust so was hoping someone on board may have used this type and have feedback.
MMG are showing one type of tailgate which is also hand fixed although from the photograph it appears the fixings are plastic  ....... not so sure about that one but again anyone having used it please let me have your experience!
I've written to Barnesbrook for a quote, hopefully they can quote, manufacture and deliver what I'm after without breaking the bank :-)
Any further suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated as I hope to have THE one ordered within the next week

Just a note with Barnesbrooke if he doesnt answer in a few days give him a ring. He is really helpful when you get talking to him and will build to you spec. My cage for the car is fantastic and no dearer than any other people but made to measure including bits I wanted.

I know Barnesbrook very well rated on here, and prices obviously lower, but to me they are nowhere near the quality of Barjo. The Barnesbrook I had made was gappy at the sides and nowhere near the strength of the Barjo. It also wasted a lot of space, despite being custom made for my car (I took it there to be measured). The Barnesbrook did the job, but I replaced it with Barjo for the same car ...

I have MMG guards.  They did need tiny holes drilling at the top, but they aren't really noticeable when you take the guard off (I part exchanged one car that previously had MMG guards, and they didn't comment about any problems with the interior).  My main reason for choosing MMG was the integral locks.  They are more convenient than the ones that require a padlock, because knowing what I'm like, I would absolutely lose the padlock and I'd worry about it rattling (I can't stand rattling!).  I've also got the dog guard with the emergency escape hatch (not sure other manufacturers offer these), just for peace of mind if I ever needed to access the dogs/remove them through the main compartment of my car.  I'd definitely buy MMG guards in the future :-)

Another vote for Barnesbrook. He has caged up several vans/estates for us over the years and if we didn't live 11 hr round trip away, I would use him again.

Thanks for the additional feedback :-)
Dave at Barnesbrook has been in touch to say he can only do a tailgate if fitted on his premises and needs the vehicle for 24 hours.  That's not a practical option being so far away.
