Topic Dog Boards / General / Furminator (again)

Sorry, I know this has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer to my specific question:
Has anyone used a Furminator on a short/medium coated GSD with a LOT of undercoat?
Has anyone used one on a shortcoated Spitz breed (double-coated) ?
Are they worth the money?
I do use a moulting comb, they are the most effective I've found but the GSD is so much bigger my arm is dropping off by the time I've done half a Shepherd and still got 1 1/2 to go!
Just want to know if they are worth the money for these particular coat types, I've bought on recommendation before only to find they won't even reach the undercoat!

Hi Anwen,

Not sure about the Spitz breed, but a friend has a GSD - long coated and its very similar in texture to my Bern, its useless on my Bern, really is. I find a brush and comb on him works wonders and a lot better at getting the undercoat out. I have found the furminator on my Bern to only pull the top coat out..

Hopefully someone in your breeds will be able to add further - this should bump back up to the top again!!

I don't have either of the breeds you mention but I did buy a furminator after reading previous posts and it is absolutely fab. I used it on my anti-grooming bernese (she is so bad we have had to muzzle her for grooming before now as if you even touch a tug she snaps - a bit of a wuss when it comes to the slightest pain :-) ). Well it was fab - no muzzle needed, took out all the loose undercoat and  loose top coat without cutting and in half the time the undercoat rake took. It was a large size but I thought I would give it a go on my cats - two semi longhair and one long hair - again a fabulous job. I bought the small one later to do the cats as the big one was a bit difficult to handle as they are small. It wasn't quite as good on my setter as no undercoat but it still helped with the general appearance. I wish I had had one for dakko (lapphund) when he was alive, it would have made grooming him so much easier I think.

> its useless on my Bern

Can't understand that Sue, it is absolutely fabulous on Bramble's coat and took out very little top coat but loads of undercoat with very little effort - I was really impressed with it!

Have no idea, but his coat is quite course compared to many Bernese. I have tried it on my little pup, so is great on his puppy coat, he has a very soft coat, so who knows..

Possibly - Bramble is a bitch so may have a softer coat than your boy, she certainly has a thick undercoat up here in the frozen north :-D

I use one on my smooth coated Chow, it works well down his back where there is more of the shiny top coat but is not much good on his chest and sides which is softer.  It's really fab on the short coat down the front of his legs and his paws and is the only thing that gets the loose coat out from there. HTH :)

I looked at them and decided they were too pricy but then got one off ebay for about £15.
Zuma is also short/med coat GSD, I use a 'zoom-groom' on him then a pin brush, also tried a slicker and a rake at various times or a combination of these. the Furminator got loads of undercoat out first time when he was shedding like crazy,
I don't use it more than once every couple of weeks at present but will use it more often when he has the next session of 'lets carpet the house with hair :-) '

Are they worth the money?
probably not at full price but what I paid - yes.

We bought one at the weekend and Munrogirl who has been staying for the weekend has kindly given the crew a couple of hours with it and I got home today and thought the girls had been kidnapped by aliens as they looked so good ! :-P A big thank you to my volunteer groomer !

Thanks for the input - looks like I'll have to look out for a bargain on Ebay!

Only a Border Collie here works well he has a dense underfur but quite silky texture.

I use a MoultMaster on my spaniels, strips out any dead coat really nicely
