Topic Dog Boards / General / 2 dogs - one lead or two??
- By loucon [gb] Date 18.03.09 16:11 UTC
I now have 2 small breed dogs, and have had my 6 month old pup on a leather lead of her own, my other older dog has a retractable lead. I know i have 2 hands but is it better handling with one retractable lead with one of those twin add on things on it so you only hold 1 lead , or a lead each ? Wondered what other people with more than one dog prefer to use ???

2 separate leads for my two.   Being boisterous boys it is easier to pull them apart if they decide to have a wrestle when out walking or with me running (otherwise I get tripped up lol).  I have also had to hold one dog back whilst fighting to get a strange dog off of the other one - I think it is just generally safer if they are not both attached to the same lead.

2 leads for mine, I have more of an easier walk that way!
They both walk great, and I have tried a double lead but did not feel comfortbale with it.

I walk two with a double lead and one with a single lead. Mooses And Puds on the double are well behaved and walk to the heel (most of the time ! )whereas Betty the youngest is still work in progress and so needs the one lead for full control.

3 separate leads for 3 dogs. I tried a double lead, but I couldn't get on with it. I am now pretty proficient with the three leads in two hands.

I have a large breed and if on my own two dogs on one and the other more boisterous girl on her own lead.

2 dogs on 2 leads - I find it, and them, easier to manage through gates, past other dogs, through the ducks etc.  Originally trained to walk on the left my older dog now walks on either side with no problem.  I tend to keep the youngest on my left.  I do sometimes hold both leads in one hand but as they are different size dogs it seems more comfortable for them not to be right next to each other.

I walk with two leads for two dogs,i have more control that way with my younger bitch on my left.
I have used a retractable lead in the past but dont always feel in control of two large dogs on other end,i like to be able to wind the lead up if needed.

Separate leads for my dogs. I tried the double lead but just couldn't get the dogs to walk nicely. Once on separate leads they were fine.

I use the two little ones on one lead and the bigger one on her own lead.

I often hold both leads in the same hand and they walk next to each other nicely. But if on the same lead Dalmatian will pull.

Don't like retractable leads.
Older dog and youngster on 2 leads in one hand, other youngster in other hand.

I don't feel I have control with retractables.
When I walk my friends or nieces dogs I always take my own leads..I need to be using what I am used to.

I nearly lost a finger with a retractable lead.  My own fault but I'd never get another one.

I got a black eye...don't ask because I still dont know how I manged to throw the thing at myself!!!

I'm not the only one!!! Hallelujah!!!  They should be classified as offensive weapons really.

2 seperate leads.  Much easier!  Tried it with one lead once, and both dogs thought it was a race to the front of the line, and the one in the back, her collar got so tight she was gasping!  So now its two leads (and most times two walkers as well!)

I have my 2 dogs on 2 separate leads. My small dog has a flexi as I dont let her off and I have my other dog on a normal short lead but to be honest she is mainly off lead, unless we are walking near a road or in a field with livestock.

I've already replied (2 dogs, 2 leads) but with this thread in mind I rigged up a contraption to try them both on one lead...

Terrible!!

When a tractor came past they managed to go head to head, get twisted, and then one dived into the bushes dragging the other one.  If I had them on separate leads I could have detangled very easily.

Luckily I knew the tractor driver and he waited to check that we emerged from the bushes in one piece - he drove off roaring with laughter

Shan't try that again then!!

I have two small breeds as well, for 'road walks' the double with one lead is fantastic!

When they are going to have a chance to run free then it's seperate leads.
I wouldn't fancy the double on much larger dogs though.
Karen :)

3 leads 3dogs for me too, mine are quite a small breed, I've thought about a 3 in 1 job before but now that I've mastered 3 in one hand there doesn't seem much point, OH brags when he walks all 6 of our dogs, 6 leads 6 dogs look at me no probs, big head :-p
- By munkeemojo Date 19.03.09 21:34 UTC
two dogs and two leads for me too - and a third dog and lead when i walk the neighbours dog.
- By STARRYEYES Date 19.03.09 23:17 UTC
Depends..seperate leads when normal daily walks two on one hand one on the other ...I hate retractable leads no control whatsoever I always use training leads which double up or extend.
Now if we are on a day out and walked quite a bit then after the excitement is over I would use a brace for two with younger girl on a single training lead. BUT always a good strong training lead .
retractables are dangerous in my opinion I know of a few people who have lost thier dogs ie:run over or the lead has snapped or the lock hasnt worked.

That  happened to me.. I have  6ft leather training leads I have had for about 15 years, all nice and moulded to my hand. If I walk any ones elses dog now one of these come with me!!
