In case anyone's curious, he travelled back very well in a blanket-lined cardboard box on my wife's lap. Cried a bit to start with but soon went to sleep, only waking up a few minutes from home. Wasn't sick and didn't wee or poo in the car (although we've had a fair few wee accidents since!)

We got him a harness in time for his second trip out - going to the vets for his jabs. Got him used to it the day before and he was fine with that too.
