My next door neighbour is a postman and he was told today that they can only deliver packets and parcels for now - the letters have to wait. The postmen have to go out in pairs for "H&S reasons" none of which seemed to make sense to him nor me - he can't take the letters with him for the houses that he is to deliver parcels to either which seems to make no sense at all.
We have had more snow again tonight and are expecting a fair bit to fall through the night - my Christmas shopping just isn't going to happen. The pavements are lethal and after slipping several times today whilst out walking the dogs I am not going to risk it tomorrow - I already have one arm in a sling and don't need the other one to follow suit.
>By the way if you are driving make sure you clean the snow off the roof - it is illegal to do so
Do you mean it's illegal
not to - really? How odd!
Sorry, can't help any more. :(
Lots of snow here in Teesside..and its bitterly cold, it was minus 11 last night!! Went xmas shopping this morning at 1030 and it was still minus 7..oh and the River Tees has frozen over aswell..the poor birds were sat on the ice looking most confused!!

i am also waiting for royal mail parcels, can you just go to sorting office and ask if they have them, even though they have not tried to deliver them yet? The rain has got rid of some snow today, but now ice will form on the pavements :(

Got woken up at 4 am this morning by Meg jumping up at kitchen door to get my attention. The snow (and guttering) was falling off the roof making loud noises which of course she hates. She spent the rest of the night with us.

The yaktracks or similar are understandably out of stock in many places. So far my boots from Robinsons (black with pink tie bobbles) have been fantastic to grip, much better than my muckboots, so thanks to whoever put that link up earlier in the year.

My hubby bought some ice grips in the Lakes last month, he has been raving about them ever since! The ones he has are best for mud/ice walking rather than pavements though. I've been ok in my normal walking trainers, though there is a bit of shouting of 'stop pulling' here and there! :-p

Snow almost gone from around here after yesterdays rain, and for some more good news. It's the shortest day. I know it doesn't make much difference till the 2nd week of Jan, but it makes me feel better that day are lengthening again.

If you are driving, having a roof covered in snow, and, in an emergency have to break. The ensuing landslide of snow onto your windscreen, can have catastrophic results. :-(

I thought it was due to the fact that when you pick up speed it flies off your roof onto the windscreen of the car behind ?

And the reverse happens if you break suddenly.

I can see the sense of clearing it; but still a little surprised to hear it's actually
illegal not to

Does anyone know if there is snow in Leicester?

It was on the radio the other morning that police were booking motorists for driving with snow on their roof. Apparently it is in the Highway code somewhere.

I know the police were issuing on the spot £60 fines in my area when the snow hit a couple of weeks ago. So unless they're rather enterprising and using it as a xmas party fund (only joking) there must be something written down that's enforceable. Might be one of those old ones like a Black Cab driver must carry a bale of hay with him.........
Thanks ceejay and Tadsy. I don't recall it ever have come up before - I suppose we rarely (in the grand scheme of things) get snow this long lasting and it's probably not been much of an issue in previous years. 2010 will certainly be remembered as a snow year!

It certainly will - I've kept a record in my diary and last night's snow was the 12th lot we've had this year.....

police in Merseyside are stopping cars who have snow on thier roof and number plates and making them clear it off its a safety precaution whether its illegal I dont know but sure they could do you for something!! I imagine the safety issue is if the snow slid down onto your windscreen and blocked your view it could cause an accident , as for number plates there has been controversy over police cameras incorrectly reading number plates obscured by dirt. According to the AA Motoring Trust the automatic number plate recognition system used by the police is unable to read plates that are dirty !
