I don't think a tongue piercing is any less hygenic than piercings to other parts of the body, what made you say that? If you have good oral hygiene then there is no reason for a tongue stud to cause any problems. My tongue stud healed within about a week, my bellybutton however took about a year! If the stud is placed in the correct position then it should not touch your teeth (mine doesn't) and to be even more cautious there are a wide range of plastic balls to put on the ends just in case you do knock your teeth or bite down on it. Instead of breaking your teeth you break the plastic- something which hasn't happened to me thankfully. Most people don't even know I have mine as the balls on it are light pink and it does not make me speak with a lisp. I am dreading the day I have to take mine out (new job) as I am quite attached to having something in my mouth to move around.
Exactly what i was going to say. I have my tongue pierced twice and i've never had a problem with it. The dentist said it hasn't affected my teeth at all. Also you mouth is one of the cleanest places on your body, and tongue bars are normally made of titaniam so there is no problem with hygiene. I love my tongue bars, any jobs I get I just don't mention my tongue piercings as you can't see them (unless i forget and play around with the bars!) Much harder to hide the other 10 piercings though!
Thanks for the back up NDQ! I am going to keep mine in until someone notices it and I get in trouble. At the end of the day, I doubt that my tongue piercing will cause me any injuries as it sits so close to my tongue.. however I will be taking out my bellybutton bar as it is really painful getting hit in the stomach with it in :-(

I used to have my tongue pierced, and I'm curious if others had the same experience? I couldn't eat solid food for nearly 2 weeks,as the whole side of my jaw and half way down my neck throbbed with pain, not to mention the tongue swelling.A theory was that they hit a nerve?? Do others with tongue piercings have the same reaction?
I have also noticed that a fair few women on this thread have arm tatt's.When I got my ankle one done I was discussing also getting a little one on my forearm, but the tattooist said that they refused to do tattoo's on women on places like arms, necks, face etc,and most other tattooist's concurred with this.I am sooo glad that they wouldn't do it as I know I would have regretted it big time, much as I do the others!

>Four months after knowing him he stood proudly in front of me one day with his shoulders braced and hands on hip, flexed his muscles and asked if I noticed anything different about him. He flexed again and then I saw my name in the empty space of the scroll
Ahhhh sigh....How romantic :-D
That definitely doesn't sound normal to me, I really hope you are ok now!? My tongue swelled quite a bit and I found eating hard because my 'mind' was trying to swallow the tongue bar as well. It was very disturbing to start with, but I ended up getting so hungry I just forced myself to eat/swallow food. After about a week the swelling got better and the pain was tolerable without painkillers. To me, it does sound as though they may have got close to a nerve or something on yours. Scary! I will never forget the feeling of the needle going through my tongue.... I doubt I would go through it again if this over ever closed over :-P
The finality and permanence of tattoos has always put me off... I know how fickle I can be! I love the post about the person who thinks about their tattoo for two years and resets that time period after each change- what a brilliant idea!
> When I got my ankle one done I was discussing also getting a little one on my forearm, but the tattooist said that they refused to do tattoo's on women on places like arms, necks, face etc,and most other tattooist's concurred with this.
My tattooist won't tattoo faces or hands on anyone and refuses to tattoo stomachs on ladies that don't have children or haven't finished their family as they stretch during pregnancy. I've got 2 large back pieces, one across my lower back is a memorial tattoo so all greyscale and the one across the rest of my back starts at my shoulders and winds it's way down to my lower back - there's no black in that one at all and looks a lot like a watercolour painting of some lilies. That one isn't finished though and needs some wildlife added to it but that's going to have to wait a few months till I get back in to see my tattooist.

Hi Eden....It does sound like whoever did your piercing caught a nerve, you should have gone straight back to your piercer for them to check it ,you may have had to take the bar out and have it re pierced when healed properly to save you the pain.
It is normal for a tongue to swell after its been pierced and hopefully your piercer put a bar in long enough to allow for this and then they should change to a bar that fits your tongue once it has returned to its normal size,if they didnt thats another why perhaps you were in so much pain.
Some people find that for the first 2 weeks they cant eat solid food and have to stick to things like mashed potato, soups, mouses yogurts etc.....A good plan is to suck on ice pops or ice cubes made with filtered water to help with the swelling. However some people are lucky enough to have not much swelling and can eat normally as long as they avoid things like spicy food and seeded stuff as this can irritate or slow down the healing not to mention should any food get into the wound it could cause infection which is why after everything you eat, drink or smoke you shouldve been told to rinse your mouth with alcohol free mouth wash till its healed.
As for tattooing hands, faces, necks (and perhaps in the case of the tattoo on the arm), a professional tattoo artist wont tattoo these areas as believe it or not it renders the person unemployable in the eyes of most employees, depending on the job you do,(something I personally find hard to accept, but thats another story and the law is the law) and now if you purposefully render yourself unemployable in this way, the DHSS are stopping benefit in some cases of anyone who has done this to themselves, another thing to think about if you have a tattoo in this area already and are made redundant, so its always best to be carefull.

I found it difficult to eat with my first tongue piercing for about the first two days, then after that it was back to normal. When i had my second one done, I could eat straight away, no pain, no swelling. The only problem was, because it didn't hurt I was playing with it as soon as I had it done! Lol naughty!

The tattooist I use will tattoo any part of your body. They are proffesionals, they run from thier own shop not from somebodies livingroom, all of the men who work there have tattoos on thier hands & necks and arms, I don't remember seeing any of them with a facial tattoo though I can't be sure.
There is a notice in my favourite tattooist's saying they have the right to refuse to tattoo anyone who wishes to have name tattooed (they spend too much time covering them up), anyone who is not hygenic(i.e smells) & anyone who is intoxicated.
I dont believe a professional tattooist wont tattoo certain areas of the body, they are there to doba job, it is up to the individual having the tatoo to make the right choice of tattoo and bodily location.
> I dont believe a professional tattooist wont tattoo certain areas of the body, they are there to doba job, it is up to the individual having the tatoo to make the right choice of tattoo and bodily location.
Sorry Fred's mum I was meaning quite a lot of them wont not meaning all of them ....just read back what I typed lol, didnt explain myself very well there did I
All the tattoo artists I know will ask what job you do first and wont do it if they know your rendering yourself unemployable in your chosen work industry, same goes for stretched piercings etc. It does happen as I have come across a few people who have left the tattoo/piercing and some jobs where employers dont mind industry to work elsewhere and cant find work in a different industry because of what they have done to themselves as their new employers deem it not professional and it gives the wrong impression about the job if an emplyee of theirs is covered in tattoos piercings etc.
Im not saying that the tattoo artisits who do tattoo faces and necks etc are not hygenic, trained properly, rubbish artists etc but one that cares about the client and not the money will always ask what job you do first and explain the consequences and wont do it for the reasons I said earleir ...I think thats what im trying to say if that makes sense lol.
>Im not saying that the tattoo artisits who do tattoo faces and necks etc are not hygenic, trained properly, rubbish artists etc but one that cares about the client and not the money will always ask what job you do first and explain the consequences and wont do it for the reasons I said earleir ...I think thats what im trying to say if that makes sense lol.
makes good sense. :-) It's similar to the puppy farmer who'll sell any puppy to anyone who turns up with the cash, as opposed to a reputable breeder who's picky about potential owners and does their best to make sure the right puppy goes to the right home.
> They are proffesionals, they run from thier own shop not from somebodies livingroom, all of the men who work there have tattoos on thier hands & necks and arms, I don't remember seeing any of them with a facial tattoo though I can't be sure.
hi mastifflover, Im not saying the tattoist you use are not professional(wrong choice of word I think in hindsight ),maybe I should have put in some cases not as caring about the person being tattood more the money they will make from it, and yes they work in a tattoo shop and probably will till they retire so it doesnt matter to anyone else if they are covered from head to foot....the industry they are part of you would expect it.
I wonder how easily they would gain employment elsewhere in some other professions should they ever have to leave the industry. I do know of at least 3 people who have found great difficulty getting employed anywhere where they face the general public on a daily basis because of what they look like and A friend of mine knows one person who is having difficulty get dole because they made themselves unemployable by being tattoo'd on their neck and hands

Exactly my point Jeangenie...you put that better than I could in not so many words too lol thanks :)

LOL, yes I understand that - a good tattooist won't gove you a tattoo that they think will adversely effect your life or anybody elses, either from predudice or an employment perspective. I think they all reserve the right to refuse to do a tattoo without having to give a reason (racial predudice tattoes, eg. wil allready be on thier list of 'will not do' so there will be a reason given for refusal).
I was chatting to the bloke who did my last 2 tats, he was saying they have to spend a lot of time keeping up to date with all the gang/hate symbols, as they have people wanting them tattood on, but they (the tattoist) wont do them as it is just promotes violence & predudice between the gangs, so they need to be aware of the symbols/patterns people bring in and want done. That is somehting I would have never thought about.
I read your first post as it was illegal to have neck/hand/face tattoos, I see what you mean now though. :)

Phew ,lol didnt want to offend ,glad you understand now:)*
note to self write down on paper what im going to say before posting and read through beforehand, will save time and countless re writes in future lol :-P *
I get what you mean now Purplehaze, no worries. :-)
I understand about tattos above the neck or on hands, but failing that they can all be covered up really so shouldnt affect jobs or employment

thanks im glad:)
Mind you its just my opinion (and it is just a personal thing) but I can never understand what makes someone having a tattoo'd hand, neck etc not capable of doing any job they wish to do, surely it should go on your capablity to do the job well and your personality rather than what you look like lol again it probably just goes back to judging a book by the cover rightly or wrongly as has been previously discussed in this thread

My tattooist is currently fully booked until the second week in October so is more than able to pick and choose who and what he tattooes, he certainly doesn't lose any money by refusing to tattoo specific areas.

ooooh - she's really pretty.

:) thank you
>note to self write down on paper what im going to say before posting and read through beforehand, will save time and countless re writes in future lol *
LOL, don't worry about it, my posts often come accross completely different than they mean and it's easy to get the wrong end of the stick reeading posts. I always read back to myself before posting, but as I put all the tones of voice in (in my mnd) that get the point accross, it always seems like it can't be taken the wrong way, but nobody else knows what tones to put in etc..
No offence taken atall :)
Very nice purplehaze. Amazing shading and attention to detail....as a good tattoo should be :-)
> now if you purposefully render yourself unemployable in this way, the DHSS are stopping benefit in some cases of anyone who has done this to themselves
About 20 years ago I was unemployed and had to attend a 'back to work' workshop to be able to continue claiming. One of the guys in the group with me was a skinhead with
a big swaztika on his forehead and one on each cheek, they were obviously done by himself and seen as his ticket out of ever being employed.
Every time he was asked why he hadn't applied for any jobs he just said that no-one would take him on 'cos of the way he looked. Amazingly, the answer the benefit people gave him each time was that he was just using it as an excuse and that it would make no difference!! I just couldn't work out which person was more stupid!

Is that a dead child on her lap with her hand supporting its head? I can't make it out very well (rubbish monitor!).

I've just got a new job (start on Monday) and my boss asked if I had any ink - when I told him I did he said that in no situation were my tattoos to be left visible (I work in a hotel) and that all ink had to be kept covered at all times. He himself has a tattoo on his forearm (an old navy tat) that he covers with shirt sleeves so the rule is applied to every employee level.
My tattoos are specifically placed that they can't be seen whilst I'm wearing normal office clothing so I don't have to worry about covering them with gauze or tape.
> Is that a dead child on her lap with her hand supporting its head? I can't make it out very well (rubbish monitor!).
lol Jeangenie...no lol its a sad fairy holding a jointed doll, sitting inamongst dead flowers the rest of the tattoo as it snakes its way down my back, will be more vine work bursting into life with more flowers(alive this time),butterflies and dragonflies. It does mean something to me but I wont share that at the mo if you dont mind cos its a persoanl thing, but if you knew me you would totally get the meaning behind it.
>It does mean something to me but I wont share that at the mo if you dont mind cos its a persoanl thing, but if you knew me you would totally get the meaning behind it.
How intriguing! But I respect your privacy and won't ask further. :-)
i have my daughters name on my back (by left shoulder blade) and have an apointment to get tattoo no 2 tomorrow. On my foot.... I'm def not one for pain, but am determined to do it. I've always wanted one there, and well no pain no gain!!! lol
Just need to go to my happy place as i have a phobia of needles.....
i'm sure i'll be fine - i survived a 5 hour labour ok lol !!
> Just need to go to my happy place as i have a phobia of needles.....

Try eating some glucose energy tabs about 30 mins before hand, apparently a mars bar works well too. The sudden pain can cause a drop in glucose which in turn can make you feel faint and make the whole thing a lot more uncomfortable. With my first tat, I had to have a break because I felt faint, they gave me some energy tabs to eat
(have had the same thing when going in for emergency dental work, given by the dentist) and it really perked me backup, so when I went in to have tat 2 & 3 done (in the same sitting), I was prepared with my energy tabs and had muched a couple before going in, I didn't feel faint atall, despite having one done down the side of me knee - a very painfull place to have one done, as I imagine the foot is!!

Now that 's a stunning peice of work.By the looks of it,your long dark hair compliments it and vice versa.how long has it taken and how long to finish. Can we see it when it's done?
I have a large tattoo on my foot and was prepared for it to be excruciatingly painful.....it wasnt. I dont think they are ever as bad as you think :-) but i too OD on coke and mars bars before a stint at the tattoo parlour so the sugar high gets me through it and stops me feeling faint.

thanks thats really kind of you poppity. I have had more done today actually and its all wrapped in cling film healing for a bit lol.It was my seventh sitting and each sitting takes an hour and a half with a fortnight in between to heal up well as I share my appointments with a friendand we do alternate weeks, she is having a massive chest piece done.
When mine is healed so far I will put a link to a photo so you can see it up to now, but it will be a while before its totally finished as there is loads more to add to it.
Come on everyone else, dont be shy get those cameras out and lets see your work Id be very interested as i love love love tattoo's :)
Well i did it!!!!
I've had my foot inked today. And am sooooooooo proud of myself. I was expecting it to really hurt, but i was pleasently surprised. It hurt far more than my last tattoo, but was worth it. My method was to be determined and positive about it, and to imagine it to be severe agony!! Plus i drank plenty of coke and ate a bar of choc 1st and ate chewing gum throughout. I also took deep breaths (which my friend who came along said like a birthing technique...).
I'm very proud of myself. I thought i would chicken out and have a different tattoo in a different location but i stuck it out.
also i find not looking at the needle really helps. I really couldn't of done it without my friends moral support tho.
> I'm very proud of myself.
Having a tat on your foot with a needle phobia takes some doing!! :)
Hope you like you're pleased with the results.

> If I suddenly regret them at 80 so be it, Im sure at that age my masses of wrinkles, grey hair and the fact I wee myself when I cough will be of more concern to me ;p
Well, at least someone has a sense of humour - you've got me cracked up here! :-)

WTG ownedbyroxy Bet it looks fab, Photos please??????
lol
Sorry for the delay Purplehaze. Have been busy. How do i put pics up??
It looks really good now, a chain of pink flowers from ankle bone to big toe. The scabby bits are off now so is great! I was sorta prepared for the pain of having it done, but it was tender for 10 days after which i did not expect as prior tattoos didn't hurt afterwards.
But hey ho, it was soo worth it!! (although i've been laughed at since. it was a friend of a friend who tattooed me and he has said i have an EXTREMELY low pain threshold and am a major wimp!!

Did you see the pics in the paper today of the young woman with 56 stars tattooed on her face. She's sueing the artist because she said she only asked for three.Says she fell asleep and woke up with half her face decked out in stars. Is it really possible to sleep through an extra 53 tattooes on your face?!Tattooist said it was only when her dad and boyfriend saw them and went mad,she decided to complain.
> Is it really possible to sleep through an extra 53 tattooes on your face?!
I very much doubt it! If each star only took the tattoooist 1 min each, that would be 53 minutes of sleeping through having a needle rapidly puncture the skin on your face and the sensation of somebodys hands on your face too. I don't beleive her atall.
Also, it would have to be some sort of awfull tattoist to carry on while the person is asleep - how would they know the person was sleeping and not in trouble with an undisclosed medical condition?
> She's sueing the artist because she said she only asked for three.
I read an article about it and she wants to sue for £10,000!! (cost of lazer removal)
I think perhaps that the age limit for tattoos should be increased to 21yrs old, it may help protect some people form thier own stupidity and tattoist having to deal with impulsive teenagers that change thier mind when it's too late.
>it would have to be some sort of awfull tattoist to carry on while the person is asleep
Having seen
the man who did it I'm surprised he was so restrained.
Ghastly, utterly ghastly. Both of them.
She is a very silly girl. I dont believe her story at all. Sounds to me like she made a huge mistake, panicked and sees sueing the tattooist as the only way to get the money to fund the laser removal. Even then she is still going to be left with nasty facial scarring at such a young age :-(
